Do you have any listening experiences with Tangband W4-657SC ? Any comments?

I found them to be a bit fatiguing to listen to. The upside is that you can get respectable bass response from them.

I sent one to Mark McKenzie for a measurement and this is what he came back with.

Yeah. I haven't pursued it but the lower peak should be easy enough to filter and if you roll it off to a tweeter before the second peak you might have something worth listening to.

I was supprised how listenable it was though... I only listened to it that once with you, Tim, but it was supprisingly good. Maybe I had just set my expectations so low that I was impressed with average sound. Either way it was a fairly short listen, but it might be quite good for the price if you could tame those peaks.

Note that Mark uses a linear frequency scale for his graphs, requiring a mental conversion before comparing to regular data sheets, but yep, that's what they sound like. A very, very nice speaker for the money with an unliveable blemish at 8 kHz.

I think I would use W4-655SA up to 15kHz. The metal SC is better for use as an extended range. I will make a speaker with 2XSC and the 28mm TB tweeter and I will report.
I can not find a better performance / price ratio for an extended than the SC. It is a looker too. |

Major gravedigging, but what kind of components would one need to tame the peak at about 7kHz. I was thinking of doing a speaker with W4-657 and some tweeter (a piezo, perhaps) to take off after 10kHz. Would 1st order crossover be enough to damp the high frequenzies on the full range so the tweeter can add the "air" the W4-657 lacks.
