The speakers sound very nice and detailed. You really can hear it's been made from brushed aluminium. Without the notch filter they're a bit harsh.

I've kept to the origional design, and added a chamber underneath for sandfilling. Painted them white (my first white speakers!). Actually I painted them black first, but I didn't like the color: white's more elegant.

Very Nice! I was thinking of doing the same thing (Sand filled chamber underneath,) AS I have cats, and a boy that will be crawling / walking soon. But I think I may have to make a wider base for them when all is said and done.

Did you build with Ply? Mdf? What did you use for filling / smoothing the entire cabinet?

Greg used what I think is an elegant solution to this in his first Needles. Note the extensions at the rear.

Looks very nice. Thanks for the link!

Greg - what are your reports on the stability of your method? I was thinking of something similar in my head actually.

I know - pretty much mentioned right above this in regards to liking the treatment. Looks fantastic.

How do you find stability?

Also - any closer shots / details on how you accomplished this?

THanks! Always love seeing your builds.

Hi !

In Spectrumaudio I see Needles kits (drivers and filter parts) with W3-871 and W3-315.
Anyone compared this 2 drivers ? Differences in sound ?

I have pair of Needles with FR8, built last winter, time to upgrade. Hard to decide, wich one to order.

I would order the w3-315sc, it has a much clearer mid and high.

Especially the high tones are important to me (for jazz and classical music)

But it's a close call I guess...

Hi hpolkerman,
thanks for answer. Are you compare both drivers in your Needles ? What is diference in LF ?

I see 871 are 3 db more efecient.
I try 82 db FR8 with my 2W SET, good only for late night listening.

Mayby 88 Db 871 I can try with T-amp ? Anyone try this combination ?

Zigis.

my needles using w3-871s sounds good with a t-amp and really sings with a LM3578 chipamp... if you are in a small room and loudness is not much of problem, a t-amp is perfect. It needs a good supply though.

I've listened a bit with a 41hz Amp6, which is very similar to a T-Amp. I think it's maybe slightly more powerful. It was enough, actually it sounded very very good, but I think I heard some nastiness at louder volumes. I didn't try my W3-871 needles with any other amplifiers, but a few more clean watts would probably be better. It's definitely worth having, as a system.

The T-Amp would probably need new input caps to fully utilize the Needles' nice bass.

I'm using the Charlize and Amp6 with the Needles with a Omnes Audio BB 3.01. This combination is perfect for lower volumes.
I don't know what the Needles do on bigger amps. It seems to me that the T-amps reach pretty much the limit of what Needles can handle...
