In my ongoing search, finally got the new driver to test in hoping to find a driver that would be a good candidate to be part of my next line arrays.
I know the TC9/TG9 are hot, but I am having all sorts of problem finding a distributor in my little corner of the world, and not looking to spend as much on shipping as the drivers will cost me!
So, I found these … hmmm… Auras… or a copy of them. Not sure. Here’s the info I can get on them: original US Plug AURA elegant long-stroke 3-inch full-range speakers, rubber edges, aluminum cone design, neodymium magnet, 4 ohms 15W. Made in China. About $12 each.
The factory says it is the same driver used in SONOS sound bars.
First impression. it’s looks like a nice driver.
The basket is stamped, but it’s nicely done, and sturdy. It also has a sealing foam on the back of the edges.
The connector, I am not fond of. Looks like a car speaker connector. Very thin wires used. But it looks like I can get a version with tabs instead.
The cone looks fine, and the dust plug is plastic (or thin aluminium, hard to say), and inverted. Looks a little weird to me, like it got punched in…
Hooked them up to see if they were ok, and they play just fine. Didn’t push them. Just a short test. Sounded fine, and percussion was lightning fast. Looks like it will be a punchy and quick driver, not sloppy.
I plan on testing with REW tomorrow.
Would love to get DATS to be able to know more about this driver…. Couldn't find any T/S info on the net.

Thanks sharing looks good
perform well too and can start you a new project, children would probably think its a boring driver when dust cap already modded.

Regarding DATS guess you know REW else see help menu can make T/S parameters and same goes for ARTA which heard that need have a LIMP package installed. xrk971 one time had a bad run that killed his soundcard input or was it output and now run DATS, but wesayso used REW for impedance measurements several times without any hardware getting hurt and guess if one have a cheap external USB sound device as Behringer UCA202 could safe one from worry about a better sound device getting killed.
Looks like a very small ferrite magnet with cover, similar to the cheap transistor radio ones.
Likely very high Qts.
I have some similar 2.25" full ranges from a surround speaker that are odd, paper cone, clear mylar dustcap. The were in a high aspect ratio reflex of about 2 litres.
They sound ok, but nothing special.

Hi,
More info (lots of pics) in the above (use google translate).
They don't seem to be cheap nasty knock-offs, great value for $12.
They look much more like neodymium magnets than
what would be a really poor ferrite implementation.
rgds, sreten.

Interesting if neo mag as it would seem.
Anyone else heard sonos drivers and liked them?
On the same page and even cheaper these look very nicely built cone:

Those look good. Aluminum cone and Nd motor for $12 is an excellent price. I bet the Qts is circa 0.5 to 0.6 and not huge. They may have some characteristic aluminum cone ring but given the inverted dustcap and thick rubber surround it may be better.
You can try to make a TS rig and use the built in capability in REW. Just need a 200ohm resistor and some words. A DMM some putty and a gram scale for Vas measurement.

Ha! I already have a few of those dust caps punched in by the kids here (students). This one would probably be boring for them indeed!

I'll have a look into that... Thanks!

Thanks, I did find that page before. No T/S info on them though. Yes, the page does mention neodymium, not ferrite.

Yep, but with Fs at 350, not going to work for my line arrays. I wish for full range, going lower than that one.

Some words? 😕
Madisound had some Neo magged 5 1/2' Aurasounds for 3$ a while back In Paper . Couldn't resist.
These work OK.. and are worth Mebe 10$ imo.
Don't be expecting Scan speak drivers.. although even those are Chinee made currently.
Buy Cheap buy twice OR if dim.. repeatedly

Some wires. iPhone auto correct at its best.
Hmmm...
Looks like I found a very nice midrange driver, but not fullrange.
Distortion makes it unlistenable up to 200-300Hz. From 300 to 10,000Hz, it is crystal clear and very nice. It drops off rather abruptly after 12,000Hz.
Listening to it, if it's cut off at 300Hz, it is one of the best sounding driver I've heard. Nice jazzy voices come out with a wonderful presence. The "being there" feeling. Probably from the small rise between 2-3KHz.
So, it might push me to do a 3-way one of these days.

From what I recall the aura ns3 wasn't really a full range either, with rising THD.
I think this is what a member here Tenson, used for his Little British Monitor, with a tweeter.

I think all little drivers have a rise in HD below 300Hz. That's not something you can avoid when excursions go big. In a line array the Sd is spread over 25 drivers so it moves 1/25 of the amount since it is now similar to. 15in driver in area.
The falloff above 12k is not good for a full range line array though. Would need a tweeter. You could buy those $2 tweeters and have a 2 way LA.
Yes, I understand I can't ask a little driver to get low and perform well.
I now have a bunch of little drivers I tried (still no TC/TG9), but this one, I wouldn't use in any other way than in a 3-way.
Anything below 300Hz "buzzes". Trying a jazz bass, instead of hearing the pluck of the strings, I can only hear a buzz, as the cone vibrates and does not produce sounds besides the buzz.
I wish the falloff be above 15KHz, as that is the limit of my hearing and it wouldn't bother me then!
I'll post a sound file soon.

So you are saying the other drivers like AHE 3in did not buzz. Well that is a no no then. Must be hitting the stops or something.
The AHE did buzz, but not of this magnitude like the Aura wannabe.
Here's a recording, first few seconds of bass and voice, then only voice. The bass is unlistenable.

Perceval,
Know your location hinders you get some brands at reasonable costs (sad and unfair reality) and you intend build a line array. Wonder if you can get SB Acoustics drivers at normal cost or even lower costs and if SB65WBAC25-4 is a driver you would find interesting, in xrk971 comparison thread it performed well and also think mondogenerator had good experience this driver. Because of diameter ctc would be good also in this size there is Fountek FR58EX but don't know if you like it or its available local. Thanks sharing plots Aura driver.

BRYTT,
It was FifthElement that has experience with the SB65 (also Jeshi), I picked that driver in round 4 of XRKs tests.
An array of SB65 would be awesome though!

mondogenerator,
Sorry remembering wrong about the experience 😱 (May then be because you picked it and then probably talked good about it got me off connect you and SB65)

Haha its always nice when someone thinks I know something.
Unfortunately in this case I know nothing, other than I liked the sound in Xs test soundbites
