Build of Tannoy GRF-R

For once Google translate does a good job......

Those are really nice bearwik, lots of work to make something that neat.

I'm a Tannoy fan, though have only made it as far as 10" dc's in Chester cabinets, I had a chance to audition a pair of GRF Corner speakers and was amazed at:
A: how Huge they sounded.
B: the £11,000 price tag (and not even original / Lockwood cabinets :O )

A few questions if I may.....

1: How big (or small) is the room that you use these in?
2: If you have heard GRF corner speakers, how do yours compare (if any sort of comparison can be made)?

My room is about 4x6 meters and I have not had the opportunity to hear the corner version but I have heard Klipsch hornloaded corner speakers and in my impression they sound just as good. I´m specially impressed with their ability to play at low levels with a very physical sound, you can feel the baselines in your body. I love it. The price for building these speakers was about a 1000 Pound, drivers and all, the drivers comes from a pair of studiomonitors from the early eighties.

Thank you for your impressions - Looks like I'm going to have to start saving my £'s again.... No 350+bhp re-work for my Audi TT this year 😀😀😀

I've joined hififorum.nu, what little of the site I've read is interesting.

Have you seen this thread? Homebuilt Tannoy Westminsters? Impressive insn´t enough.
HiFiForum.nu - Tannoy Westminster Royal DIY

They are a very very imposing / well made / beautiful pair of loudspeakers.

I could live with GRF-R in my man cave/flat, but at home anything as 'large' as Westminsters would be out of the question, they would spoil the view out the lounge's picture window..... which is one of the reasons why I bought the house.

Bjorn,

This was really great diy work. Congratulations!

In fact, low compliance driver, as used in Puma would be my first choice for such big cabinets. I am sure that your GRF soudns great.

One advice for you: the rotary switches used in crossover are very problematic. If not used for prolonged time they just ruin the sound. Switch them back and forth once each day to keep them clean.
