Default lucky goodwill find... vintage Vitavox DU120

A friend of mine bought some end tables for his new appartment at 5$ each.

inside were these 2 near mint Vitavox DU 120. Made in england and apparently still in production. (We can get some vitavox units here in canada for roughly 6k a peice.)

Was wondering if anybody has any comments/ideas on what I should do with these.

I was thinking of making some sealed old style boxes to go with my 60's turntable and 20watt chip amp and hopefully replacing the cap on the tweeter somehow. (although I haven't looked into if that's possible or not)

But really I don't know. These look amazing and should be treated with respect in my opinion.

Regards.

6k a piece?I'd trade them for some field coils, new ones. I bet the cones wont last forever, or the new driver will last definitely longer then this one....

Just hilarious how much people ask for such thinks.

There's pretty good evidence at hand Vitavox drivers don"t suffer from aging, the pair he found is probably 1965. So that's 50 years, why would the cone not last another 50 years if used carefull. Otoh how do you know new stuff will last 50 years? There's little or no evidence for that assumption.

I would try them, very carefull no soldering, just to take a listen. Maybe an open baffle would be the quick and easy way. I think it's an Alnico magnet, i am no expert on vintage stuff, but Alnico can demagnetize, something i would be worried about. Hope they are fine, and wish you lot's of fun playing with them.

I'd think it would be worth doing some measurements on them to see how far they might have drifted. Do you have the tools?
Designing boxes around the original specs might doom them to sounding average.
Can Alnico be re-magged easily?

That reminds me I bought a lotto ticket this week. Haven't checked the results.

EDIT: Close but no cigar.

Yup that's what I was thinking.

And I will soon have the tools to measure these. Here's hoping they are still close to spec!

They are so retro cool, I'd figure out a baffle of glass or something to let the drivers be seen. Way cool.
