Lowthers Do Not work very well More minuses than pluses when All is said and done.
Lowther has stumbled back and forth from the brink of Bankruptcy for Decades.
For genuine reason.
Spend large and find out why :)
Devoted 2 years of my life trying to reverse entropy.
But hey! you can certainly try.. joining the legions, who like myself, refused to listen to accumulated experiences/wisdom
and convince yourself into thinking that You ! will be the one who manages it.
Just like Farming: one (claimed :) tale of Success breeds hundreds of subsequent failed attempts.
Fill your Boots... is all I can say.

My God! Sounds like a sad quote! Mr. Pass seems a bit more "positive"...

Maybe you'd try to work on Forte? Thanks anyway.

At BAF 2013 I ran a pair of PM6A's in open baffles with slot loaded woofers
and it sounded quite good, in fact I was told by several attendees that it
was the best sound there.

Of course this is a specific favorite design and I have the resources to make
it work as well as it will. You will find that I have published all the
information, so anyone can build it and find out for themselves at a cost
much lower than your average high-end loudspeaker.

I own more than half the "full range" drivers out there, and of those the only
ones that I put in the same category are the Feastrex D9nf.

But then that's me. What worked for you Bare?

I love the PM6A, but for some reason, I really don't like the DX Lowthers at all. I don't know why. If you invest the time, the results can be astonishing (but I don't think they are for the impatient).

If you're looking for quick, fun results, upgrading the Klipsch crossover might be the ticket (I have some ALK's although for La Scala's). However, you have to really like the speaker to begin with. I rebuilt some Heresy crossovers and while there was a huge improvement, I still hated them :)

alternative?

I read the Scott Faller article at "Enjoy the music". Very interesting experience...He passed from Medallion to OB speakers. Then I went to Lowther website to check Mr Pass projects with similar drivers. I could get Altecs 416 locally, it could be another "hot" set of speakers with PM6A or 5A. :)
Thanks also for Klipsch informations.

PM6A

crazyfrog,
"another "hot" set of speakers with PM6A "

Yes, my experience show the lowther work "only" in a satellite horn down 100 Hz,
fill up to ~600 Hz and reduce the stroke, a good sub is needed.

look my sat-horns

Could you tell us your favorite in the next
lower price stratum (below the Lowther, that is)?

Someone would have to ask and create work for me...

I went back through my files. All of these were at least evaluated in open
baffles and with few exceptions I used a woofer crossed in at or below 100 Hz
with a B5 crossover/EQ. If you want the basic setup, check out the
Slot Loaded Open Baffle article for electronics and photos of the OB's that
Jon Ver Halen has at Lowther Home

All the drivers relatively inexpensive, and all of them were "livable", that is to
say that at worst they sound pretty good after a glass of wine. Most of
them require a little screwing around to get them right. I will not bore you
with audiophile descriptions of the sound of each. This is DIY, so write your
own. :)

In no particular order:

Seas Prestige FA22RCZ and the Pioneer BU20 - both of these are decent,
smooth and reasonably neutral. You can get by without a woofer. The
Pioneers are discontinued, but were about $20 when available. Both work
pretty well on the bottom with a number of common enclosures. Seas
Exotics are priced out of this listing.

Fostex: FE166, the newer FE208ES and FE108ES, FF165WK, FF225WK,
and the older FF165K and FF225K. Not so much the older 208, 204, 206,
which I could not really warm up to. I think the most interesting at the
moment is the FE108ES. And of course there a couple of high priced FR
drivers.

Audio Nirvana: AN8, AN6 and super versions. Every once in a while I
mount these up and get a pleasant surprise. The cast frame versions are
spendier, and I leave it to you to decide about the extra money. The Alnicos
are too high for the list.

Jordan J92: Also great in a little box by itself or in the Kleinhorn. I keep a
pair in boxes on my desk, and I have loaned them to some very fussy people
who liked them a lot. No adjustments needed.

Alpair: The variations on the Jordan (plastic cones) are a safe buy, and they
sound good in a box or OB. I tend to like the larger ones. At BAF we had a
pair of the new paper cone units (which I was told were Peerless, possibly
mistakenly) which were there for evaluation at the next Speaker Camp, and I
think unanimously judged the best of the bunch. I was reminded of that, so
I just ordered the 12P models.

Tang Band: I have the W81772 and 1808 and out of the box they are a
good start, but it's another case of needing a little work. That said, lots
of people like them.

Moth Cicadas. Almost a Lowther, but cheap, and better bottom.
Unfortunately, like the Pioneers, no longer generally available.

There are quite a few not on this list for various reasons, not the least of which
is I do not have them or I haven't done the work to try to bring out their best.

Papa, I'll throw in the KEF Q100 drivers in there for you to try as well. I recently built a pair and they throw an enormous soundstage and are extremely good sounding. You can buy a pair of the Q100 bookshelves and then extract the drivers.

Nice summary, btw :) I'm glad I happened upon it.

I have a nice pair made by Jon Ver Halen at Lowther America Home

and also have borrowed a pair of the Feastrex 9 inchers.

In both cases I consider them better, but they are very expensive and
somewhat cumbersome.

I think most would say the improvement is out of proportion to the cost, but
what's new?
