Bob,
Perhaps you might also comment on the FF225wk? I have not listened to as many different 8" drivers as you have, but I find the FF225wk very appealing. Certainly needs a tweeter. I find it to be much smoother than the whizzered Fostex drivers.

Cheers, Jim

A minor correction to a point above: the Fostex F200a is not a copy of the LE8. It was (presumably) styled to look like it, just as the long-defunct cheaper FX200 model was, and it is certainly similar to the JBL unit, but it is not a copy of it.

The FF225 is actually a pretty nice sounding driver. Definitely a "vintage" sound, i,e,. rolled off top. Definitely needs a tweeter. I didn't have the greatest luck with a single cap XO. I think this driver needs a real XO down in the 5-6kHz neighborhood.

To add to Scott's comment, the original 200 was somewhat of a lookalike but that's about it.

Bob: - do you find anything obnoxious about the dip/peak starting around the 9K range that would require LP on the 225? It sounds like you've already done this - if so, which tweeter ( FT17H?)

Right. FT17H. I crossed with caps anywhere from .47μF to 2μF and it never sounded right. Thats why I suggest at least 12LR in the 5-6kHz range to avoid that peak. I finally settled with 24LR @6kHz with the miniDSP and biamped it. Then it was nice.

The Alpair 12P looks great except the sealed box displacement-limited SPL. It is a very interesting driver, nonetheless.

It's not a PA driver.

Maybe I have lots of time to waste.

Are you talking about efficiency? Maybe I misunderstood your post.
