Default Speaker Ideas Needed

Hi Folks, new to the forum but dived in when I saw the amount of stuff on here! I have just got my Separo SE88i up and running and sounds great with some JBL Control 1's although as you can imagine this is not the end of the story! Been looking at sealed box with Wild Burro Betsy K's (2 cubic ft) or building a Fostex 166 horn loaded kit and everything in between. Other than OB have you guys got any suggestions (OB is fascinating but my wife would object).

Cheers,

Tim

Of all my speakers, the Cornu spiral wall mount is my favorite. Easy to build, unique look, doesn't take up floorspace, high spousal approval rating, and sounds great. Looks hard but is actually an ideal first speaker when done using foam core for the channels.

Ever think of building a Cornu Spiral horn? Now you can!

Default Thanks Guys

Great tips, thanks. Really looking at FR, would the Voight Pipe one shown adapt. The wall hung looks rad and very tempting. Are there scale palns anywhere. Was looking at 6" drivers, feasible?

Cheers

Voigt. No 'h.' Named for P. G. A. H. Voigt.

Depends on the driver you select. What has come to be known in recent years as a TQWT / TQWP (it used to be used to describe the exact opposite) is a tapped conical horn, sometimes mass-loaded, sometimes not. Most of the time you'll get better results from a simpler untapered MLTL. The 166 you mention is one of the few cases where the extra gain BW from a tapered QW pipe can be of some use, although since it needs all the help it can get from the pipe, it's difficult to provide much in the way of mass-loading.

The plans for the Cornu are in the thread. There are several. The most popular is based on the original commercial product and re-drawn by Planet10. There is the circular spiral and also the very first foam core cornu spiral drawn up by me - totally customized to have square internal corners and a larger throat to allow use of a relatively larger driver for a smaller footprint (20 in size). 6 in driver is on the large side but could be made to work if you play with channel depth and throat area. Important to look at the ratio of the throat area vs driver chamber volume to make sure the upper cutoff freq is appropriate for how you want it to sound. Too small of a throat with a large chamber volume and it will sound muffled.
