Question 4x Series-Parallel vs 1x

Given 4 identical small full range drivers, what is the difference between using just one or using all 4 in a series-parallel or parallel-series set? The obvious confounding factor is that the solo driver is a solo source while the 4x set is not. So, the 4 drivers could be mounted in a single enclosure or 4 single enclosures. In either case, they could be arrayed linearly or polygonally in a plane or in a 3D configuration. What would the benefits and drawbacks of the 4x set be? My little mind is overwhelmed...
