Ever think of building a Cornu Spiral horn? Now you can!

it's been a while my cornu friends, the fostex cornus are up in the living room! Did anyone find a good way to attach speaker kloth? I'm afraid they might function as really big dust collectors if i dont put any on. But i can't figure out a proper way to get it on there, apart from hot glueing it on directly. But then i wont be able to correct it if anything goes wrong or replace it later on... any input would be welcome 🙂

3M Spray adhesive is your friend.

My first shot at the cornu thing with a 20"x5" "real" spiral. I think the squared spiral might give a little more elbow room to glue, but it went together pretty quick.

The throat's kind of narrow, but with 5" height it ought to be in the ballpark of Sd (in my head anyway).

Forgot to stuff until after I laid the glue down, but I had sheet batting, so I was able to roll it up, drop it in the center, and use a screwdriver to unwind it out into the horn without making too much of a mess. Does it look understuffed?

Going to try a TEBM65C20F-8 aka HIBM65C20F-8. Didn't see that one modeled - 20" is probably too small but maybe I will have beginner's luck.😀

Welcome aboard. 🙂
Thanks!

I noticed a result of using a true spiral is that the final legs (arms?) of the horn aren't there, reducing the effective diameter, so I cut some strips to fill those out. This is probably not great because it creates a slight restriction before the final expansion, but it does noticeably increase the bass.

The BMR kicks out some impressive bass, and really does great off axis, but vocals etc. are just drowned out too much. It's sort of okay without the leg extensions, and if it's not up against a wall, but do either or both of those things, and all the important stuff turns to mud. I had high hopes for the driver, too - solidly constructed and a great price.

I popped in a vifa TC9 after gluing on an appropriate sized baffle and it does everything I want in terms of clarity .. unfortunately the off axis is not as even as the BMR, and of course, the low end isn't there. Going to read back through the thread again and maybe try this driver again with a wider, shallower, and squared off spiral.

After the TC9, I also tried the GRS 3FR-4. It definitely wasn't as smooth as the TC9, but it was better off axis and I would swear the bass was a little deeper, even though the numbers don't suggest it (and of course I know ears can be fooled). At half the price of the TC9 and with some dollar store foam, you'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding cheaper pair of speakers, even secondhand.

What are the dimensions of your Cornu? The tc9fd usually sounds pretty good in this and even has satisfying bass. Like Cal said, add stuffing to taste. I suspect that the round spiral does nothing to stop the mids from leaking out and muddying up the sound. Add more stuffing into the channels leading from chamber to split in flow. Cut a window on backside of foam with xacto to access channel to add stuffing if you have to and resell temporarily with tape. Once sounds good you can glue it back.
Good luck.

I can´t believe there haven´t been any replies in over a month. But i finally got around to making my pair of cornus look pretty. Here are the results! They still sound very good. But when cranking them up loud (-10db on the amp) they do reach xmax which doesn't sound pretty 🙂 But normal listening music / tv / movies is alsways done at -36 to -24 and normally -16 is the maximum volume i use anyway. I still have plans to make a new pair but not sure which driver and size..

It looks like a smiley where the TV is a mouth and speakers japonese eyes... they need some painting ... I mean ther speakers ! but good look as it is !

good looking... Fostex as I can see.... Does it needs a bass enclosure to help them in the low end or is it just good like that ?

I did paint them 😱 the fronts are mdf so i painted them white. And with my painting skills, anything else i do to them wont be an improvement.

The cornu does boost the bass, so i dont think i understand the question. For this pair i did some tests and it goes to 60-70 Hz at the most, so they're not really bassy. A sub would probably be an improvement, but they already sound great without one. 🙂

Those look nice with paint and wood trim. Which Fostex is that ? FE103?
