It's supposedly there as stiffening, IIRC. Whether it has any significant effect is open to question; you'd need to A/B test a couple with & without.

It did stiffen up my K12 back panels. I could feel much less vibration on them by putting my hand while playing. For a speaker like a BLH or Karlson, it does help while not taking any interior space, like one could do in a sealed or BR box. I guess doubling-up the panels might be simpler and similar in effect in the end though.
