for the ability to deliver useful power to the room the regular Karlson approach is one of the best (if not "the best") imo. For me there's little use in having "extended" low end frequency response with little or no dynamic ability = big piece of wimpy trash - a lot of music is dynamic and requires dynamic reproduction. (perhaps this can be measured with very fast RTA peak hold programs -?) for instance I currently have an 8" Peerless India woofer bought in multiples for Nelson's "SLOB" - 1-8" woofer topped with a helper tweeter plays "loud" but when the repeating drums come, there's no useful output or sense of dynamics and the direct radiator fails to couple to the air - hopefully 6/side will do something.

A regular little Karlson with 70-80Hz low end rolloff can sound more natural and agile than a direct radiator with "extended" small signal response and also do better than many horn. It takes some motor power, reasonably low moving mass in the woofer/fullrange and some watts. A "K10" size (~21"x15"x12-?13") should be able to navigate peaks to ~120dB. The slotted pipe waveguide sounds very natural and can be made for pennies.

Foirixi's rear-load K-coupler is quite striking and elegant in appearance. There's one US patent which is related to that layout (and of course the patent examiners missed Karlson's work...)
