Glad you can do that.
Since your amplifier has 8ohm & 16 ohm taps, then it would be logical to series wire, rather than parallel wire, the 125s. Note that a single 125 is extremely unlikely to work in this cabinet; twin units have a better chance, but I make no guarantees, since it was not designed for this driver. I don't know re the tweeter; the only way to find out is to try it. Note that rear-firing may be problematic since these cabinets were intended to be used quite close to a front wall. Again, there's only one way to find out if you like the results though. |

Hi Scott,
Just wanted to update you on our progress with Olivia Chang's but as I have been reading up on full range speakers I cannot help but wonder about the Mark Audio series drivers that could also work in Olivia Chang's... What is the difference between the CHP's CHR's and Fostex FF125wk? besides the evident SPL inefficiency of MA's!? What would happen if I used the EL70's instead of the FF125wk? I almost certainly would notice the MA;s having to turn up my volume on my amplifier to drive them louder, but seems to me the bass extension would be better than the Fostex's would you agree? what about sound clarity and depth?Qts of EL70's is .55 Fostex are .42 and seems the lower the Qts the more cabinet size and horn loading is needed....anyway your comments are definitely appreciated! Lydia,
I'm not Scott and may be out of line, but you asked for a recommendation for current drivers for this cab and you got one. Scott is well aware of the Mark Audio drivers and I believe he would have recommended one if he thought it was the best match for this cab. You have insisted on building a cab based on an unavailable driver and have been warned that you are in undiscovered territory. So, either build w/ the FF125WK and see how it works, or stop now and build an existing design. No one can give further advice. Your first mistake was cutting wood before you checked on driver availability. IMO you are continuing the mistake by building boxes that may not work for the FF125WK. The sole bright side is that there are designs for the FF125WK so if the Olivia's don't work out you haven't wasted driver money.

Lydia,
Jumping in before Scott and +1 to what fastbike1 has already said. If you want to go for EL70 then you should check out the Coniston or the Coniston^2 design. for Mark Audio CHR-70 it will Lotus or Lotus^2. If you use the forum search function or use google, you will find some user impressions on both Lotus and Coniston designs. For both builds it is likely that you will be able to salvage some of the wood you have cut for the Olivia Chang. |
