I think the circle cutout you mentioned is all about appearance and refers to the name "C-Horn" ... there shouldn't be any sonic purpose behind it.

footnote: I might be wrong... designer might come up with a different answer

Presumably for the aesthetics, and where the name comes from.

At the expense of comb filtering distortion from the cavity resonances, delay............

So it would seem. I wouldn't have it either, but I guess they're willing to trade that off to obtain the desired looks.

Plexi (Poly methyl methacrylate) certainly can be cut with water jets and lasers, but you can also use routers and cnc without optical loss. (per one of the manufacturer/distributors:

Quote:
Plexiglass Acrylic offers a 92% light transmittance, can be easily cut with power saws and routers and thermo-formed without loss of optical clarity.
PLEXIGLASS - Plexiglass Sheets - Discount Plexiglas® Acrylic plastic sheets for sale: clear, colored, frosted in stock - custom plexiglass is easy to order.

Many ways to skin that cat.

I'm gonna tell you something you won't believe I estimated all costs and whole the project (MDF + Plexiglas + water-jet or laser cutting) will cost me only about 400USD except final painting
but I won't copy Andrew's commercial design... I'll design my own horn... the only similarities would be acrylic side panels... that's it

well over here ( west coast Canada) the Plexi sheeting alone would cost several times that, then you calculate the machine time to cut it and all those layers of MDF, assembly and painting...

BTW, you could cut plexi with a chain saw if you wanted, but ending up with nicely polished edges as seen in the photos is a whole nuther story - and as for laser/waterjet/highspeed diamond coated CNC etc, the finer the edge the cutting tool/material leaves behind, the more work required to make it safe to handle

you're right... I double checked and found out that acrylic price had a huge increase in the market... I'll need 1400 mm * 2400 mm piece of 20mm acrylic which will cost me 6720000 Iranian Rials equal to 370USD... taking this into consideration, the final cost would be something around 600 to 650 USD which still seems fantastic

We machine Plexiglas with conventional mills all the time. I'd like to try the lazer. What kind of finished edge do you end up with.
