Hi All
This is my first post so please go easy on me. I have taken the plunge and bought a pair of Electro Voice MC-8 fullrange drivers from the dreaded Ebay which will arrive in a few days. I know they're not the most highly sought after drivers, but on size and price, they may avoid detection by the "not another weird gadget, what did you buy that for department". I am hoping to build some very simple and minimal open baffles for them, for 2 reasons - aesthetics and curiosity, if they sound apalling then I will look at building a ported enclosure for them. Either way I know they are going to produce very little at low frequency. I would like to augment them with a seperate sub unit - perhaps the Decware band pass design. I will initially be powering all this with my trusty NAD 304 amp partnered with a Denon CD player and a NEAT P58 idler drive that I am restoring (ps if anyone knows of a NEAT cartridge for it I would be very interested, I have a NEAT Ga 16 arm on it and would love to have a matching cartridge to finish it off). Questions I have for people far more knowledgeable than myself are- As the speakers are rated at 12W and my amp at 30W per channel will it be too powerful for the drivers. Is there a way to crossover between the EVs and the sub to roll the low frequencies across to the sub so that the EVs are not overloaded at low frequency and vice versa. As a crude amalgam of the above, if I have some form of crossover to the sub between the amp and the EVs will I in effect be creating a 2 way system which if say the sub drivers are rated at 100W will allow me to run the set up with my NAD and not risk damage to the EVs. As you can see from my questions I am no high end audiophile, my goal is to create a setup that can play a wide range of musical styles including a reasonable amount of bass, is not going to cost me the earth and probably most importantly satisfies my partners stylistic and size requirements. All advice, guidance and insults gratefully received. Matt |
