Planning on making a portable speaker. Was about to buy the HIVi B3n after hearing a lot of good things about it. But then I seen Peerless India W3-LK76-PBK 3". Its more efficent, lower Q and cheaper. So would running 4 of these sound better than the 2 HIvi?
Okay thats the first question the next is I found a calculator at madisound for a vented box and was wondering how to add 2 speakers to the calculator? Or maybe how do I calculate a vented or bassreflex box? Last question, if I have 4 speakers can I run 2 sealed and 2 vented? Thanks |

Interesting driver. It would need a tweeter but that's no big deal. (Just FYI, lower Qts is not automatically better. There would be at least several and maybe a dozen other factors.)

Was trying to keep it just fullrange cause I don't know anything about crossovers. Or is there a simple way.
How does it compare to the hivi b3n. And what are other things to look for when picking a driver. |

Looks like a nice little woofer but a different animal from the B3N. The B3N isn't great in the bottom end in practice and passively EQing the rising response, baffle step and cone breakup makes for a fairly complex network, (there is one on Zaph's website for reference) and shamefully low sensitivity. It has to be said though that the result is genuinely stunning in the detail and imaging departments and the downward dynamic range is staggering in a driver at this price.
Your little woofer looks easy to match with any number of good cheap tweeters, and a simple crossover is probably cheaper that the B3N's correction network anyway. You would then get (probably) better bass and treble, should-be-OK midrange, higher sensitivity and probably better power handling. What you give away is the no-crossover-single-driver-purity and the sublime realism the B3N gives when properly fettled. YMMV rgds blakk |

thanks for the reply. starting to look for a simple crossover for a tweeter. Know of any good site for reading up on crossover design?
I want to run two of these in a box, how do I calculate 2 speakers? |

You could start very simple and use this tweeter Dayton Audio ND16FA-6 5/8" Neodymium Dome Tweeter with a 4.7 uF non-polarized electrolytic cap and a 10 watt 3 ohm resistor in series with the tweeter and a 10 watt 6 ohm resistor in parallel with the tweeter. Run the Woofer full-range. The resistors will attenuate the tweeter to get it in line with the woofer. If you like the sound, you're good to go. If not, you can do some tweaking.
Here's a link to some very basic crossover calculators. http://www.mh-audio.nl/CrossoverNetw...dspeakers.asp# Have fun, Mike
