I have a question or 2 about modifying the Zigmahornet design.
1) Are there any benefits/drawbacks to using a pair of full range drivers for each speaker instead of a single one? It seems like it might help extend the range or smooth out the frequency response of the driver??? Also, would a pair of drivers want a larger cabinet??? 2) Could any of the cabinet dimensions be increased, especially the width so, for example, a 5" driver could be used? I know very little about speaker design so I appreciate any feedback you all can give. Thanks. |

It's an old design and has some serious drawbacks, however if you built a Bi-Pole version (one facing forward and one on the back) it would solve some of those problems. A pair of drivers would need a cabinet volume of twice the single driver size. Be aware that the port would also need to be changed as well. If I were to do this, I'd build a cabinet that was essentially two regular cabinets back to back with the a common panel taking the place of the back panels of each cabinet. If you're looking at a 5 inch driver, then you need an entirely different design. Truthfully, a cabinet needs to be designed for a specific driver and any attempt to do otherwise will give results that can vary from pretty darn poor to really awful. Best Regards, TerryO

Best to take the basic concepts (the only solid ones are aesthetic) and start from scratch.

I didn't want to rain on your parade, but Dave's absolutely right. There are a lot of recent, really well engineered designs out there. The designs on Dave's site are a prime example and would certainly be the first ones that I would consider. I've heard a fair number of them and they're quite good. Best Regards, TerryO

The Zigmahornet was the first speaker I made. It had its qualities for example when playing acoustic music, but it was in the end quite limited as well.

yes there is, but you need two different horns, look my double horns, the Kornett XL fit with 5", bass down 35 Hz, no imp below 50 Hz ~4 Ohm, best soundstage by seccond driver indirect.

I still have my ziggies, when I built them several years back I liked them so much I bought 2 more drivers. The sound recording is not good but my ziggies are here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFkuxKshWnw
I like them for casual listening of jazz, vocals without a sub in my small room.

Goody75,
If the Zigmahornet aesthetics is a strong point to you, then you might as well check out the Lotus: http://homepage.mac.com/tlinespeaker...ies-061109.pdf Tall and pretty slim. Folks who've built them like 'em. But as always YMMV, depending on listening tastes, musical preferences, source components. |
