My wife and I bought a new house in December and my FE126 Frugelhorns are getting lost in the new living room. I'm looking for a design that is larger, but not ominous. I'd say 4' max height.
The Alpair Pensil 10.2 or Pensil 12 look nice. Are there links to photos of these constructed and reviews? A while back I was really impressed by the look of the Fonken167 floorstander but since the driver is no longer available I'm guessing that design never made it public. Is it possible to build such an enclosure using an Alpair driver? I also skimmed the new FH mk3 thread. It's appealing since it is a little taller and I obviously have the advantage of being able to corner load...but I think they won't be much of an improvement over the mk1s I have when it comes to filling up the room with sound. I also see lots of new full range drivers available at PartsExpress but haven't found any builds for them yet. Anyway, the wife is going to be out of town mid-August and I'd like to order drivers this week so I can have everything ready to work on while she is gone. Please take a glance at the room below and give me some suggestions. Thanks in advance |

The FH1s do still sound great, especially when you're in the sweet spot but are nothing like they used to be in our previous room Plus, I want to move the FH1s to my office which is closer to the previous room size
I saw a finished version of the twin 4" design a while ago. I like the design...just not the 2 driver part. I'd very interested in a floor standing alpair10 design if you want me to be a guinea pig or something. I don't have the calibur of equipment to test it with as some of the guys on this forum but i could at least compare it to the FH1s before they are relocated to the office. I've got a set of uFonkens in the office now too (awesome design of which i've built several as gifts). Last edited by chuyler1; 29th July 2011 at 09:35 PM. |

You can also have a look at the top firing Micro Towers:
http://homepage.mac.com/tlinespeaker...aps-150909.pdf The compact dimensions indicate great WAF. |

I take it subwoofers would be out of the question?
Cutting excursion down will give the FR drivers a much easier time.

You have a great situation with your room to do any number of the larger cabs/driver choices out there without overwhelming the room, damn that WAF
![]() Edit: Maybe if you match the new cabs to the bookcase shelving and tv stand that you have along the front wall, the larger cab choices won't stand out as much to her as all will be the same color Last edited by DaveCan; 30th July 2011 at 01:47 PM. |

It seems to me that a pair of BIBs would work great in those corners

Yeah me too, although I'd probably use them inverted to fire at the floor cause of the vaulted ceiling, but have the option to try them firing upwards too and hear whats best
Not as refined as some other options out there, but lots of good sound for a rather simple to make cab..

Hello,
my double horns would be a solution, small max. 95 dB the KORNET or RDH20, and ALPHORN with SCHALMEI

I second the subwoofer idea. Cheapest and easiest. I assume your home AV preamp has a built-in crossover. Using it to keep low stuff out of the "full range" speakers will improve their sound quality. My living room is slightly smaller. I get along just fine with a pair of Jordan Jx92's and a sub. I think the system would be adequate for quite a bit larger room.
Of course, the down-side to simply adding a sub is that you do not have all the fun of building new speakers and tweaking them for months.
