Default Voigt-Pipe with Pioneer A11, help

VP cabinet like little larger speaker but have 4.5" Pioneer fullrange being idle in the garage. Like to follow Bob Brines cabinet as detailed here :https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/jstalnak...eakers/#Brines

He used a different driver (larger radioshack), A11 published specs are: , Power handling: 20 watts RMS/30 watts max * Voice coil diameter: 1" * Impedance: 8 ohms * Frequency response: 70-15,000 Hz * Magnet weight: 9.3 oz. * Fs: 70 Hz * SPL: 90 dB 1W/1m * Vas: .31 cu. ft. * Xmax: 1.1mm * Qms: 1.40 * Qes: .47 * Qts: .35 *, although GM noted published specs are unreliable.

Would the cabinet size including the vent size as used by Mr. Brines reasonable for A11 drivers as a starting point?, (plan to leave side accessible for adjustment of stuffing and BSC circuit. Plan to add piezo with L=pad in the rear.l

thanks in advance,

See attachment.........

I don't have MathCad reinstalled yet, but at a glance it's almost as big as an unfolded BIB, so I'm thinking it's probably a poor fit overall unless driven with a ~matching impedance amp.

wife likes the style of VP, t-amp clone or JVC hybrid amp (EX-A1) will be used. I am willing to make a larger VP cabinet...

I meant Bob's VP is theoretically much too large and tuned much too low for this driver and your amps if not loaded with a relatively large BLH. Indeed, it says that assuming a low system impedance, its lowest practical tuning [BH loaded], is this VP's ~45 Hz.

Bottom line, such a mismatch can always be EQ'd to work, it just may not play loud enough at a low enough distortion to be acceptable, so only one way to know for sure.

thanks GM, your opinions are valuable to me. I have the original Merrill's driver (DCA4) for the zigmahornet (actually new, never used) in the garage. Don't have the specs however, wonder if this can be used in Bob Brines cabinet...

One driver I know that will drop into my "Straight Pipes" is the TB W5-1611. They are still on sale for $45 a piece. Since they are Nd powered, they will either jump in price to near $100 each or disappear.

You're welcome!

Dunno, but if his drivers are scaled spec wise to maintain a similar 'tone', then with the DCA5.5 requiring ~2x the VP's net Vb and ~10 Hz lower tuning it might work well with minimal fine tuning, though of course without specs it's a crap-shoot.

shocks!, special is over now $65 each at PE. Price is near Fostex FE166en at madisound..., may have to give up on idea of Straight Pipe...

My ultimate goal after I retire in few years is to put FE166en in your cabinet, but I will have to practice in other cabinets first.
