Hi all, does anyone know of any drivers that might compare with the Veravox drivers (now long discontinued)? I am looking for a pair but not holding any hope.
The new Fostex 'WK' drivers look interesting, especially the FF165WK which has an aluminum dome dust cap, although the 5S had an inverted dome dust cap.
I liked the mix of dynamics and liveliness of the Veravox's but still able to be used without a filter as they had a very smooth midrange (not quite as smooth as the FF225k mind you, also not available)
I am thinking of some sort of corner positioned box to reclaim some space and reduce the need for BSC and lost efficiency.
In the past i have had -
CSS FR125S - Nice but too low efficiency and not enough dynamics, good bass for size though.
Bandor 50mm - Same as above but very good treble and midrange open'ness
Veravox 5S - Great mix of dynamics and midrange but could be a little harsh in the treble occasionally. Overall my fav!
Omnes Audio L8 - Really good dynamics and 'snap' but mid range was a little closed in and treble to splashy
Fostex FF225K - Very efficient, and SMOOTH midrange. Great dynamics but need a big box.
Thinking maybe the FF165WK might mix the qualities of the FX120 (not heard) and Veravox (metal dust caps) with the dynamics and smoothness of the FF225K?
Music is a mix of just about anything from Dance/occasional Dub to Classic rock, Indie Rock and Blues. Mainly Low level listening.
The small room they are destined for-
Any opinions would be very helpful!

Any others out there? The FF165WK's look interesting, (just waiting on some first impressions at the moment) other than that....
The FX120 has always been of interest, but one comparison i have read said that it was not as dynamic or lively as the veravox's. Sure looks smooth though!

I have heard the FX120 a few years ago, in a FAST-setup with W-frame dipole woofersection. Very clear and open sound. I was particularly pleased with definition/resolution in orchestra recordings and the texture of strings. With many loudspeakers, a violin sounds silky smooth. In reality, a violin sounds a bit scratchy (coarse hair bow over coarse metal string) and the speakers I heard were able to reproduce the effect really well. They sounded really good on dub music as well, spacious and dynamic.
I have the Omnes L8 as well. Those are a bit more dynamic, but not nearly as open sounding.

I have a pair of mint condition FX120 that have been enabled by Dave @ Planet10.
PM me if you are interested.

Well bought some BB3.AL drivers-

And really liked them in OB, so decided to go that route again. (also looking at the NXT/Exciter designs as well).
Looking at the Seas FA22RCZ, its quite cheap (£60/ea) and does ok in an open baffle simillar to the JE-Labs one. It will be used in relatively near-field in the room at the top.
Is there likely to be anything better (running full range, without bass support) for the same money?
And is a Phase Plug likely to help the FA22RCZ?
Some here-

Gradient Axis 8 (£55/ea) look good as well, but for some reason edging towards the Seas.

The Seas is a good unit & you can see where your money has gone -it's very nicely built. Sonically, it's a solid performer as well, although it does have a very (contemporary) hifi presentation for some reason or another. Leaves me a bit cold, but that's just because I happen to like other things; I imagine most people who want an 8in FR unit would be delighted, especially for the money.
Phase plugs might be possible; TBH though, I'd leave well alone. I don't think it would benefit much.

Has anyone used the FR22RCZ in a sealed box smaller than the 60Litre recomended by Seas?
In UniBox, Qtc-0.707 is just under 40Litres (F3~65Hz) which sounds quite good!
Planning on just using them in OB first, then build some cabinets later. I hope to get away with no BSC by placing them up against the walls, and see how i get on.

The bigger fullrange drivers radiate quite a lot of midrange from the back of the driver. I have had bad luck with placing open baffles with 8 inch fullrangers close to a wall. I got harsh and unclear sound. The problem became less when I put plenty of damping material between the driver and the wall, but it was less than satisfactory. I really enjoyed open baffles well out in the room (when I was single), but it isn´t an option anymore. Perhaps a `leaky`-aperiodic box would be better, but that will have a certain boxy sound as well. Maybe there would not be much advantage over a normal sealed box.
I agree the Seas looks well built and I´m hearing positive things about it. But no first hand experience.

Maybe i was not that clear, i am planning on using the Open Baffles out in the room, and then when/if i build some cabinets, have them up against the walls.
