This is of course predicated on the assumption that you can afford a Mac in the first place. 😉
Yeah, any luxury items just reduces my long term financial viability, i.e. how long I can afford to live since it's looking like my retirement funding isn't going to recover enough from all the scammers/moochers in time...........
GM
And for the rest of us poor bastards, it's possible to run OS/X in a VM 🙂
???
GM
Presumably (I haven't checked) a reasonably quick Intel based PC can run Mac OS/X in a virtual environment(?). Sounds terrifying to me. I have enough problems keeping one OS on the straight & narrow never mind keep track of two. 😉 That said, Win7 seems to be pretty solid. Probably Microsoft's best effort since DOS 6.2
If there were any justice, those people (I use the word in its broadest possible terms) would be locked up. Or something akin. Sorry I haven't been in touch for a bit, hopefully will be able to catch up over the weekend (at last).

Hi GM, I have the opposite scenario from Dave.
I have ordinary PC hardware, running Linux (the host OS), and I'm running virtual machines for OS/X and Win7 (the guest OS's). The apps run just fine (including MathCad).
Everything on the VM's seems to work fine, including audio, CD's, thumb drives, etc. (except 3D accelerated graphics which I haven't bothered to fix). I happen to be using the free VMware player (free on Lin and Win) but as Dave says, there are others including VirtualBox.

Hi Scott and GM,
OT but did you guys read in today's edition of MJK's Yahoo Groups summary that he can now shape the upper part of a BLH's horn bandwidth at 24db/octave?!!

Hi GM, I have the opposite scenario from Dave.
Hmm, all this recent computer-speak has meant little to me and don't have time to delve into it until I get all the property damage repaired/replaced [or until the computer forces a change in priorities], but it's getting very 'long in the tooth' plus the monitor has recently gotten in the habit of not coming out of 'sleep' mode until I do a power failure re-boot; so if we all could continue this in private at some later date and come to a 'meeting of the minds' as to what I will need to buy/acquire to best overall serve my varied needs........

No, what's so special about it and why would I might want it?

Amen

Amen, brother!
I'm in the same boat.

Hi GM, I should probably refrain from speaking (to avoid embarassing myself completely) but he has been working on a new BLH design routine where the box incorporates an acoustic trap, which lets him roll off the horn's HF very steeply. He is ready to build a prototype but the information is not yet published.
He's also developing better ways to sim corner BLH's (specifically, if I understand correctly, modeling the corner as a resistively loaded part of the mouth vs. simple assumption of 8pi boundary).
It goes without saying that I am not qualified to paraphrase MJK to GM. 🙁
OK, sounds like he's adding a muffler same as Olson eventually did to his BH loaded studio monitor. As a general rule though, 3rd order is the goal AFAIK for a scoop style BLH. 4th would be nice for a compound [front and BL] horn, though it would either severely restrict driver selection to the very 'shouty' or require a super tweeter horn AFAIK.
Hmm, without more math than I can probably imagine, it seems like this would be limited to K-horn type designs, but in the scheme of things it's the lack of accurately figuring out the corner's true gain curve that keeps one from making an accurate enough sim.
None the less, any advancement is a lot better than none, so more power to him and look forward to seeing what he comes up with.

GM,
Re: your FR8c ML-TL cabinet
I've located a local millworks shop that will cut all edges at 45 deg. & has 13 layer birch ply on hand at $65 per 4x8.
Would it be best to recess the FR8 for a flush surface?
The FR8's I purchased have the whizzers replaced with plugs. Using Fostex FT17H tweeters, is there a preferred location?
Should they also be recessed?
Is a 7K or 10K 6dB crossover best?
I believe in "measure many times, cut once" before I get the enclosures made.
Thanks,
Frank

GM,
Is this enclosure performance dependent on the height, width & depth ratio, or can it (within reason) have the dimensions changed as long as the volume remains constant?
The question came to mind when finding out how much waste there is in 4x8 sheets with the present size.

Height, cross-section, driver placement (wrt to the line length) and terminus position are critical.

Budget constraints delayed the fabrication of GM's cabinet til now.
One more answer, please.
Should the port remain square shouldered, as shown, or would it be preferable to flair the outside ?
Thanks to everyone,
Frank

Between vent area, MLTL loading, vent mach ['speed'] is sufficiently low for the driver's size/peak power handling, so no acoustical need, but a round over looks nice and won't unduly lower tuning on a baffle thickness vent; so your call, though ideally both sides of a vent should be flared when required/in doubt.

GM,
Thanks for the prompt answer. I'll send photos as the cabinets are completed... maybe before they're finished in black stain would be best!
