Default Extending large bookshelves into full range (Midbass?)

I have some axiom m22ti's and a polk 10" sub that gives me decent spl for the low end and it's crisp when properly adjusted and placed. The bookshelves definitely lack definition and response in the lower-mid range. I can't seem to find any pre-built cabinets for single large drivers that are not subwoofers. I'm looking to create a component speaker with active crossover and basically a speaker stand with possibly side-firing mid-bass drivers? Looks aren't really important, I'd rather be frugal and spend on the drivers and cabinet. Has anyone done this, what drivers/amp and cabinet (diy or prebuilt) might be best suited?
