Most of what Bose does these days is vastly overpriced mediocrities at best. But the original 901 is something special. Not for everybody, but it has some interesting ideas. Definitely worth looking at for inspiration.
I can't see how EQ is so controversial among some. It's not worse than so many other kinds of filters already used. Like BSC, various crossovers, and even creative driver placement is a kind of EQ. Not to speak of the EQ used in the recording process and the colouration even the most spare amp has.
In my book EQ is an indispensable part of sound reproduction in a real room and with real speakers.
In an ideal world we shouldn't have to use it, and indeed it shouldn't be overused, it can be used to make good speakers great in a real setting.
