Default Parts Express 269-469

I wonder if anyone remembers these cheap 4" wide range drivers that were selling for 95 cents a piece about 10 years ago at Parts Express. I think I picked up 20 pairs, they were cheaper than the shipping. At the moment I have no idea where the hell they are, somewhere in my basement in a box I hope. I used one pair in a simple set of Voight pipes which have been playing several hours a day for the past 10 years as background music around the house. Even had them turned up to 11 for a New Years Party and they sound pretty good with everything from Stevie Ray Vaughn to Cream; although perhaps the Jack Daniels smoothed them out a bit. I just loaded another set in a small back-loaded horn and you know for casual listening on a winters night in front of the fire, they are still pretty good for what they are. A nice delicate sound ideal for vocals and simple natural recordings. I just ordered a pair of Fostex Fe126eN's so it will be interesting to compare the two.

I got two cases just before they sold out. They're really nice drivers--quite flat and well behaved. Recently started contemplating a CBT array...

Stock drivers dave, from Solen in Quebec.

Bill, I had heard around that time, they were TV speakers, but noticed on the box that mine came in, they were labelled Pioneer 10cm Full-Range. I found them today and still have 20 pairs unopened. Should keep me busy for a while.

It has been very inconveinient that Fostex "borrowed" my nomenclature, only changing the capitalization.

What do you plan on putting them into?

I want to put them into a small rear-loaded horn. Nothing tall and overpowering perhaps 48 inches max. I'm not into squeezing every last ounce of detail any more, thank goodness. I'm long over my audiophiliac days of fine tuning everything from Sondek suspensions to placing quarters on top of the speaker cabinet, a popular and controversial tweak in the early 90's. (I actually thought I did hear an improvement.) I sold all my single-ended tube gear last year to someone younger with better ears. Hated to see them sitting there without being played. I used to obsess about imaging and fine detail. Now I just want some sweet background music to enjoy with my Scotch and book. Hopefully, the Fostex's will be the vehicle. Sorry about the capitalization error.

Frugel-Horn Mk3 is proving to be a good match to this driver.

No biggie. Since Fostex chose that nomenclature it is inevitable.

Hmmmm, now they look quite interesting, the F-H Mk3. Not too complex to build and about $120 for Baltic Ply. Aesthetically pleasing and by all accounts a nice sound. thanks for the tip dave.

Oops correction! I thought it said 4 sheets of ply per pair. Stupid me. Even cheaper.

If you are careful, and do the 15mm build, 1 sheet of 5x5.
