Hi all.

I have a friend that wants to spread some loudspeakers in various divisions of his house.

His budget is very very tight. We know that problably would be cheaper to get some low cost speakers rigth of the store, but he has some aesthetics requirements.

He already got one amplifier and one equalizer, we only need to get the loudspeakers.

My ideia is to get some nice full range drivers and build the appropriate enclosure.

Right know I'm thinking in using the TB W4-657D driver.

As you can see the cost of each driver is 30€ plus shipping. With the cost of wood and paint we achive the budget limit for my friend.
This leaves no money to create a passive filter to correct the freq. response.

Do you think that is a good option if I correct the response curve with the equalizer? I could antenuate in 5-6dB the response in the peak region between 5KHz and 8KHz, and raise a bit around 3 KHz.
Do you think that the overall sound quality will be ok?

By shear coincidence I have just installed a pair of W4-657D in double bass reflex enclosures based on a Fostex design for the FE127. Bass is excellent but top end was a bit too strident for my liking and considered a 5dB notch filter centered on 7K. Instead I tried a 0.27mH series inductor to give a gentle roll-off from about 4K. This has tamed the top end very successfully resulting in a speaker I can happily listen to for extended periods without fatigue.

Based on your experience, do you think that the W4-657D driver will work well in a small sealed enclousure?

Hi Zeverin, I can't comment on using the W4-657D in a small sealed enclosure as I haven't tried it.

I suggest you Search the forum for W4-657D as there may be others who have had more experience with the driver in different types of enclosures.

What is the max size he is willing to live with? What frequency range do you expect to cover? How powerful is the amp (i.e. how efficient do the speakers need to be?) Will the speakers be up against the wall or can they be out a bit?

The enclosure must be very small around 3 liters, but I would like to cover a freq. range between 100 Hz to 15 KHz. The amp is very powerfull, around 200 W RMS, and the speakers must be against the wall.

Not suitable for a really tight budget, the new Mark Audio Alpair6s would fit your box requirements. (the metal cone one will fit into 1.5 litre).

Less expensive: I made a recent suggestion for a 2 litre cabinet for the Fountek FR88

Even less: 4 versions of the Aurasound NS-3-193. I've had these in ~1.25 litre sealed and really liked them.

PE sells a slightly larger version of the Aura -- haven't tried it.
