One of my wife's friends was "stopped" by a couple moose blocking the road, on the way to work last year. Was driving a VW bug.
The moose walked up to the bug, walked around, giving it curious looks.
Then one of them decided it would be fun to turn it upside down w/ an antler,
and the two of them spent a good while spinning the upside-down beetle around, and batting it back and forth, like playing hockey...
then got bored & walked off...
the backed up traffic righted the bug (& strapped in, dazed, but otherwise ok driver...).

On the moose thing, I am surprised how fast they can run. Saw a moose running in a gully on the road side ahead, then it veered up the bank to the side of road and for a second we were side by side, we were travelling at about 100km/h he was running maybe at about 70km/h? Scary but cool.

Could this be a fair comparison between a Spawn BVR (ie. Derwent) and the Mar-Kel70?
Mar-Kel70: with its stiffer cabinet structure would have a cleaner/precise sound
BVR: Larger internal volume will have a bit deeper bass, perhaps more colouration from the cabinet.

In Derwent's simplest form that may be so, but it doesn't need to be.

The Spawn BVRs use the same style high aspect ratio ports as the miniOnken. In at least one case (Brynn), the Spawn is directly based on a miniOnken derivative (Classic GR Fonken). We have built both. With the same bracing structure, sand filled behind the deflector & doubled sides to allow for a bigger champher (and stiffer sides), out Brynn was no more colored but with bass that was a bit more effortless and had no need for stands. It still did not quite have the finese of the FonkenPrime, but that comes from a narrow baffle, and the BIG champher.(Derwent has the narrow baffle)

Derwent, with more volume will trade a bit of control at higher volumes for deeper bass (not having heard it, that is a hypothesis based on experience)

Interesting comments Dave,

Would a cross holey brace similar to the Thirlmere (90 deg below the driver brace) be something that help the Derwent? If an additional brace is added would the volume need to be increased by the net area of the brace?
Adding sand to the bottom sounds like a neat idea, if anything it probably make the slender tower more stable.

I will be ordering the components to day and hopefully pick up the plywood tomorrow.
Looking forward to the build.

That is how we would build it, if not even more brace than that.

If you want to try out something simple,just to get an idea of what full range is all about,
you could go for a pair of Beymas 8ag/n on a bass reflex enclosure.
After finishing my "viech´s",I wanted something smaller and ended up with a pair of sweet sounding loudspeakers!
Believe me,they work really well and bass is surprisingly good!
