Greetings,
HLLY introduce a new set of "REAL Wooden" speakers in a prrety good price and FREE S&H for the introductory period: HLLY MT-3 Real Wood Bookshelf Speaker High End Audio Anyone tried? I think the wooden case looks amazing and might worth a good price for itself - even if the driver would be replaced... The driver also seems to be decent enough: HiVi M3N 3" Aluminum/Magnesium Midbass Any recommendations? Any other source for such nice cases? Gal |

The little 3" HiVis are well respected and good value for the dollar -- not hard given the very reasonablr price. The M3N is quite similar to B3N.
One has to be careful with solid wood enclosures. As the weather changes (particularily humidity) the wood moves and can crack. At least these have the advantage of being small and look to be butcher block. Zaph has a project with one of these 3". dave

Any other recommended complete kit at the same (affordable) price range ?
(<200$ shipped to Israel) I liked that design so much that I consider getting a pair as a full range bookshelf (standing on a shelf near the back wall). Is there a significantly better upgrades I should consider for the Driver/Filler etc.? I also liked the Tang band D3-1/D4-1 kits - but they came at higher price above my budget ... I look at those Hlly boxes and imefiately think ... time for a trip down to the kitchen store to get some butcher block cutting boards...
Twin Audio has a CHR-70 box that is quite reasonable. But by the time you get the much more expensive drivers it would be >200. Nor many cheap kits out there, have a look at Blue Planet. A number of boxes there that would perform as well or better (althou not as pretty). These should meet your budget CC96 Spiralino TL - Lautsprecher Selbstbau by blue planet acoustic Base 3.AL - Lautsprecher Selbstbau by blue planet acoustic Cyburgs Needle - Lautsprecher Selbstbau by blue planet acoustic The last has quite a following... dave

Hi Dave,
Sounds like you're discussing two different things. A real butcher block is end grain and a laminated cutting board is edge grain. If you are planning to use cutting boards, there are a few places over here in the big smoke that might have good deals on bamboo boards. Only problem is I am yet to see any decent sized ones so you'd be stuck with boxes about the size of the ones in this thread. Let me know and I'll go huntin' fer ya. |

I am looking at threads for information about bamboo plywood and was wondering if someone could summarize and or point to objective descriptions of how it differs sonically from say, Baltic birch.
Much Obliged. |

The 1st & 2nd pictures posted above appear to show that the top of the cabinet isn't completely square to the sides, one of which seems to be taller than the other. I'm all for the rustic look, but that doesn't entirely fill me with confidence...
