Cant seem to decide which of these small fullrange drivers to use in a waveguide/horn from 500hz and up. Which would be most dynamic and with the least fatigue?

FE126En is largely an unknown. The older FE126e needs work to minimize the fatiguing 7 k peak.
FF125K has, what i find annoying, a resonance associated with the aluminum dustcap (i have not been able to completely kill that) TB, an unknown to me. Add to your list, Alpair 7. One gives up efficiency for control. CHR-70 or CSS EL70 if you are on a budget. I'm sure there are more as well. dave

Hi there DEFO: I've been operating TB W4-1320sd in several OB configurations for 2 years without problems and generally like the performance, although I have used some HF cut. I've been crossing over biamped at around 100hz+-, so you should not have a problem at 500hz crossover. I am contimplating experimenting with a wave guide, if I can figure out the dimensions for a large WG for 460hz xover. ...regards, Michael

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'm stuck between the TB and the FE126En. I imagine the Fostex has better "snap" and dynamics to it given a notch filter at 7 khz. What I really wonder is if the waveguide/horn loaded TB will achieve the dynamics I crave...

If that's what you crave, you might be better off looking at some wide-band compression drivers.

Have you considered the Lowther DX55? I use it in a 200Hz-ish, 60 x 90 conical horn with about a 4" throat. Since horns are essentially bandpass, the top is attenuated just enough and works very very dynamically with vivid sound. Sounds similar to a compression driver horn combo, but plays lower, even with first order and without strain. You may need to attenuate it though as I do even with loaded Altec 15"s.
Fostex vis-a vis Lowther are more opaquish, and are better used "full range" in rear horn loaded or bass reflex with correction circuitry. |
