Last year on a whim I bought some Audio Nirvana Super 12 Cast Frame speakers before doing much research on them (or, indeed, on full-range speakers in general). I have not yet installed them into cabinets. Since that time, I have done much research about full-range speakers in general and the AN12 in particular, and I have doubts about using them for critical listening. One of the main problems is that they only model well in huge cabinets (bass reflex or sealed). I don't have the space for the optimum-sized cabinets for these speakers, but I would still like to use them in a secondary system. Here's my idea: I have a pair of old 3.2 cu. ft. (about 90 liters) cabinets lying around. The AN12 models fairly well in a sealed cabinet of this size, but does not produce much low bass. I am wondering if a stuffed port or an aperiodic vent might be the solution for getting some acceptable low bass response out of thse drivers in these cabinets. Can anyone shed some light and offer some suggestions?

You must have some room available to have bought 12" drivers to start with.
These are pretty efficient drivers. How 'bout simply installing them in open baffles and giving them a listen before dismissing them for 'critical listening'? w Last edited by wakibaki; 2nd March 2010 at 01:18 PM. |

I don't suggest attempting to retrieve low bass from any fullrange driver. Rather, supplement it with a dedicated bass driver.
