Hey,
Following my purchase in japan, see the "shopping in Japan" thread, I am wondering what could be a good enclosure for my specific room/office. Don't mind the mess on my desk... office.JPG - Windows Live Speakers you see are Blaudio's Pastoral. Chinese made and a fine little speaker, only not so popular as the Aurum Cantus speakers... but at least as good. Problem is that it's quite packed and don't have much space left to set up speakers. Additionally, my office desk is huge and speakers need to come above them. Do have a preference for floorstanders... I've done some browsing but surely there are other possibilities. Additionally, I will be pushing the speakers with my Yarland. Note the different components in the EU version and China local version... I have the local version... YARLAND AUDIO ÎÂÖÝÊÐÑÅȼÒôÏìÆ÷²Ä³§ | YARLAND AUDIO Interesting design's in both readily available plans, driver at good height to come over my desk, overall design, and good references are the following: Mikasa or Saburo The Spawn Family of Double Horns Metronome The Metronome Would these be a good match considering my room and amp or are there better options. Listen to various kinds of music but mainly jazz, jazz rock, rock & pop. Michael |

The Mikasa is bass shy in comparison to the Saburo and they have nearly the same footprint.
The room looks small enough that the Saburo would likely produce enough bass output for you. In a big room, they need assistance down below. What about an open baffle on the desk with a seperately powered woofer or two for the lows? Just a thought.

Hi Cervelorider,
Well, i bought the 126 models to play around. Actually started with a OB i heard in thailand last december. Didn't imagine it would be possible to put them "on" my desk, was rather thinking to play with this in the living room where i have more space. Probably a little to much actually... You're idea sounds interesting but would prefer to spent the money on some enclosures for both the 126 and 206 i bought, only have the yarland amp at this moment so in the end your solution would become quite expensive. |

If you are considering an open baffle build with the 126e....
I would read the MJK open baffle articles. Lots of guys here (including myself) are using a small full range driver, like the 126e, in an open baffle combined with either a Goldwood 1858 18" woofer or Eminence Alpaha 15a woofer, with good success. There are a few options for crossing over the drivers. You could make a passive crossover like MJK does in his article, use an active crossover and bi-amp, or just run the full range driver, full range with a "sub amp" to low pass the woofers and power them. Essentially bi-amping, but only using low pass on the woofers. There is a particular stereo amp available at Parts Express for $139 (US) that has a built in low pass crossover, like a sub plate amp would have. Parts-Express.com This is a nice piece of equipment for those on a budget.

Certainly there's no doubt the FE126E in any competently designed and constructed horn, whether rear or front mouthed, could supply adequate SPL's and bass extension in a small room (believe or not, perhaps even too much of the latter).
However, it appears that your seating/listening position is perhaps too close for complete integration from double mouth horn enclosures such as any of the SPAWN series. Similarly, it's been my experience that Open Baffle designs require more space to function satisfactorily than the pictured room has available. Since you indicate that you already have the drivers in hand, this particular application might be one where less is more - for the FE126E either the Buschhorn MKI, Frugelhorn or (inverted) BIB would be worth investigating. If your situation / budget could accommodate selection of a different driver, whether from Fostex, Mark Audio, TB, etc., you might be better suited by considering a non-horn design. I can think of several, and no doubt other posters would have suggestions.

Cervelorider,
Thanks for your response, I will def start reading up on OB's and the MJK topics. wether it will be for this actual room or my living room. As mentioned in another thread, i'm just starting with diy speakers and want to experiment to see what type of enclosures i like best. Hence, the theories of crossing drivers as like the chinese i hear everyday, uncomprehenseble, but will (crossing) and am (chinese) working on catching up. Lesson learnd however, start with a design and buy a driver accordingly. Didn't have much choice since my trip was rather unexpected and had little as no time to check things out first. On the other hand, i'm sure i'll have lots of fun with the speakers i bought @ Chrisb, As mentioned above, i'm new to this and want to experiment a little. It did cross my mind that i can't really go big since my room size. Experienced it with my vintage Beosystem 4500 system back home. I tried the 5 different models of speakers (for the link rooms) i have in a rather small room. The huge M100's 5-ways are def a no go sinds its like living in a boomroom something... 126 I am very tempted by the frugal, bush, etc but its kind of hard to "just do it" because for starters, i think these are a little to complex for a first diy, and then I hear rumors that i might be relocated to Korea by my employer. Moving around with all my stuff is not such a practical thing. As they didn't pay for my move from shanghai to my actual location i would like to keep the kg's down and practicality up... Hence, i am reading on BIB; simple, cheap and light. If not moving, the frugal might come into play. 206 was menth for my living room, which is 3x + my office. Nuff space i think for a spawn series, right? With the rumors i will probably go for the standard cabinet or the 208 model which seems to be a good match too. Still need to read up on these 2 enclosures to find out the difference. Sell them readely evailable here in china. Depending on the wood its in average 150 euro for a set. MDF is mostly used but read that this is not such a good choice for a horn. Baltic birch reads to be better. Also read that MDF is not such a healthy product to have around. Other brands of speakers might come into play later. Have found some websites of a companies, there must be others around but still need to trace these. Later... As this might interest the people here i attach some random links. You can translate them with bablefish MH4020AC / ?? FE206E It is hard to get excited about the constricted TL in the 2 following posts... your 1st thots are going to be (my guess), i wonder what adding a woofer would do... better to just start with a small sealed or aperiodic box, knowing you'll be adding woofers. dave

Greetings!
I can't comment on your plans for the 126, as I have only built one set of speakers and it wasn't any of those you're considering. However, I do have a pair of open baffle speakers in my living room, built from the designs of MJK and I have been very happy with the results. An OB design would be the quickest to get started with, and then easy enough to discard and rebuild if you do end up moving. Have fun! |

hi dave,
Ok understand for Onur's, a no go for 206. Thanks for the link. Brings up this question however, can one use all 127 cab designs with a 126 driver and some corrections, or none at all. Have found several post stating that. Like its aparantly ok to put the 206 in the 208 cabinet, without any resistors/caps or whatever is needed. Rocket science to me these things. And for your guess, think u're right. Always seem to end up in the same corner... Would the bib's be a better option for acceptable bass without a woofer? Won't cost so much, very simpel to build, and still a very good design, (for what i know from reading) to keep long term. Later, wherever that may be, i can upgrade to something else, dependings on room etc. Frugel or spawn fam is on top of list however. Regarding the hasehiro's, as you also note, it would indeed not work out. Went through his website this afternoon to search for a fe126e cab and found something very different indeed. @ gvimhoof Thanks for the logic. Will have a look around if i can find a good chinese made woofer/sub. Am very pleased with the chinese made blaudio pastorals so there must be at least one good sub around too. Even if as was suggested my room is too small/bad listening position for OB, the sub will come handy sooner or later i guess. |
