Default CHR-70 or TB w4-1320

Hello,
I plan the construction of a small BR box for my desk.
As a driver I have the Markaudio CHR-70 or the TangBand 4W-1320 selection.
The case has about 6 liters net.
Which driver is better suited?

Michael

I know that the CHR-70 works well in 6 litres (i'd leave sealed or maybe aperiodic)

Depending on what you consider a "small speaker", this is worth a look: http://flogatt.kilu.de/Hifi-Forum/Sa...%20FloGatt.pdf (uses the W5-1611)

I have not heard the MA but expect it will be great based on comments. The Tangband is also a great speaker. Use a super tweeter to get the most from the top octaves. I live happily with a pair as my 'home theater' system. Neither is a bad choice. I'd purchase the MA's if i didn't already enjoy the TB's.

If you want to run it full range, I'd recommend the W4-1320. It has better top end of the two in my experience.

And, in fact, the better bottom too in 6 litres vented box tuned to about 75 Hz. The CHR-70 will need about 17 litres to play optimal bass.

I have first hand experience with W3-1364 which also is a bamboo cone. Excellent performer.

Hi Guys,
THe choice between my CHR-70 and TB's is naturally for each individual. So it's not for me to comment. However, some comments are technically incorrect:

Erling: -
Vented at 6 litres? I'm not sure if you're referring to the TB or CHR. For the new CHR-70, depending on who's software is used to make the calculation, expect a 6 litre BR box to deliver a port resonance of 60Hz, cut-off at 57Hz.
Port sizes would be around: 25.4-mm (1") Dia - length of 51-mm while a 40-mm Dia. would be 140-mm long.

17 litres? This is not an "optimal" BR box size. It's far too big. Power handling would also be limited. For the new CHR-70, expect optimal bass in BR at around 11 litres.

For the new CHR-70 specs - please see: http://www.markaudio.com/chr70

Cheers

Mark

I agree with Mark that the new revised CHR-70 is optimal in a 'around 11 litres' BR box. My WinISD calculation shows 11.5 litres and it will also better tolerate to shrink volume to 6 litres. I used specs for the original unit for my calculation above. I am sorry I had not observed the revision.
