Default Open Baffle Size for Pioneer B20

I'd like to do a simple build with the Pioneer B20 on an open baffle. I've read through most of threads but cannot seem to find an ideal baffle size.

I'm looking to put them in my game room which is 16'W X 30'L X 8'H.

Sourced from ipods, CD's and vinyl. Music is whatever i am listening to (classic rock, blues) to whatever my kids and their friends like (rock, country, hip hop). Maybe hook up the Xbox as well for gaming.

Could I do something 2'X4' with a tweeter or is that too big for the baffle?

Thanks

OB is really easy to experiment with. You can make test baffles out of cardboard and try different sizes really easily. You can also play with Home of the Edge

repeddler,

Check out the design on my site under projects. Unfortunately, OB's generally need to be large to get decent extension (unless like MJK, you are balancing a very high Qts with a narrower baffle). A 2' x 4' ain't going to get you very low. Think 4' x 4'. That's why mine is folded! The Qts on the B20 is pretty low to go it alone (without a woofer), so you might consider doing something to raise the Qes (and with it, the effective Qts). If you've got a tube amp with a high output impedance (many do), you might already be there. But, also consider using particularly small speaker wire. First, 24g Cat5 (I like the plenum stuff), and if that isn't enough bass, maybe something 30g (Radio Shack's wire wrap wire or magnet wire). If that doesn't work, you can always add series resistors. Keep in mind that you can not build a baffle to big if the speakers Qts is around .7 or lower. If you go the size of mine, and you get the effective Q up to around .7, you can expect to get down to 70hz +whatever room gain gives you.

If you can choose a driver tailored for OB you might have better luck. And you will be able to get away with a smaller baffle.

I've not heard the Wild Burro Betsy, but it seems a good bet, and not much more expensive than the B20.

Hey, thanks for suggestions and links. Looks like I'm going to have to give it some more thought.

That speaker is acoustic suspension, meant for an enclosed system. It will not give it's intended respones on an open baffle. A 2'x4' baffle board wiil also cause problems. 1 to 1, 1 to 2, ratios on a baffle board will cause harmonic "distress" Yours is 1 to 2, and way too large for the speaker. I'd start, with a 10", at 13"W X21"H and 11 1/2" deep. Over-all dimensions.

What is harmonic "distress" and why do baffles with that ratio cause problems?
