Impressive magnet
Are you involved with Seas in any way ?

Why do you use stainless steel instead of copper or alu ?

Only involvement with Seas was that the previous director at Seas sponsored some of my early research and I bought parts (and got access to Seas labs and lab engineers) from the Exotic drivers and built my first prototypes with a Exotic motor rebuilt to 18mm magnetgap with ferrofluid, the voicecoil from the Exotic and my own handbuilt cones and dustcap, and surrounds from both Seas and BoPro Untitled Document
I learned more of what I should not do than what to do..
But some day I had both evaluated, tested, calculated and listened enough,
and made the final drawing of all the parts and made the specifications.
The resulting driver was better than expected, but due to nearly all resonances and breakups are eliminated - it was not a full range driver - only 10khz bandwidth :)

Stainless was used after trials and testing found it to "work" better..

Ah, you are kind of a pro then
And could we expect your driver to be "avilable" ?

As I understand it, copper and alu works differently, one being better to deal with impedance and other better at distortion
And besides that there seems to be about a hundred different ways to do it

Im experimenting with planar magnet design at the moment
Fore some reason a thin sheet of copper between magnet and back pole iron seems to do some good, I just dont know what or why
Maybe it just bends the magnet field lines making them more straight, but opposite field definately seem to get more focused and stronger
Might be that it creates a small resistance that makes the opposite field stronger
But I know its different kind of magnet/motor design and different aspect

The only thing about a magnet that affects the sound is how much flux density it creates in the gap...

There should be no difference in the sound. I don't see how there could be. Am I missing something obvious?

If the flux density in the gap is truly constant, then I don't
see how there would be a difference. There is a quality to
the magnetic material known as AC permeability, which in the
case of a loudspeaker would be the magnet's response to the
magnetic field and motion of the voice coil. This will be
different for different materials, and you can get a sense for
what that might be looking at the slopes on the
magnetization curves.

Presumably AC permeability would be responsible for some
distortion effects, particularly intermodulation distortion.

Could it be on the order of one percent or so? Maybe.

I think you're oversimplifying. The different magnet materials act differently in a variety of ways, including the electrical and thermal conductivity. They also change the geometry of the motor, to a variety of effects. And I'm inclined to believe that barkhausen noise is a real issue in them.

Oh well, it's okay: your TL design for the BOFU works real good, lot of smooth bass :) I do believe I'm the only other one who's built a pair, though I did a little badman trickery with the baffle and driver and did some stuffing in the front section.

hoi i now have my soundbody`s loaded with philips 8 inch alnicos 3800/m5
they are about 50 years old
and a philips tube amp this is a perfect match the amp is also about 50 years old
the sound is loud and big with only 2x2 wats and very modern to
giles petersen world wide show is good to listen at now

realy it is a big relieve for me that this is working so wel
