Would taking the rear panel off a pair of large floorstanders have the same effect as mounting them on a large baffle. They are BIG and open baffles sizes are not normally as wide as these.

I can't see the speaker clearly, looks like PA with a midhorn and a bunch of supertweeters?


Just cutting the back off is not the same as a proper open baffle design, which takes consideration of baffle diffraction/rolloff and other artifacts.

But, if you feel there's nothing to lose, rock on. You'll probably have some issues with cavity resonance too, however.

I really ought to chuck them out but they were such a bargain that I thought I would try it just out of interest. I got them about 6 years ago for £25 ($50) They were virtually unmarked. They originally sold for about £500. 15" Bass, Mid Range (horn loaded) and 5 piezo tweeters.

I would run the bass with an active crossover and amp, and use an L-Pad to attenuate the mid and treble.

it depends on the quality but with that many tweeters and a half decent mid(ish) horn PA gear shouldn't need the L pad, just playing with the cross over points for bi amp. the mid horns in pa are usually quite high, often used to fill in when box is used to extend the bass driver(lower fb) and looses a bit up top.
if you have some test gear, or maybe can find the original spec for the speaker, see what the cross over points are and start from there.
PA gear is a nice source for some OB parts, the bass drivers go to a few hundred watts, so assuming you only drive them way bellow that, the Xmax should be more than enough, and large pa drivers can be quite efficient 98db even 100db isnt uncommon.
rather than scrap the boxes, take out the drivers, cross overs, and what ever, sell the boxes on ebay, get a few quid and buy a sheet of ply, big diy shops will give you a couple of cuts free when you buy, and try ob!

Why not take the back off, neatly, then you can screw it back together if needed.

For the extra tweeters - some kind of "ambient tweeter" thingy - I know little of this, but some people on here will be able to help out.
