Tang Band W3-1401sd; am I missing something?

Just checking out this driver on Parts Express and can't figure out how this driver can claim an Fs of 75hz. Based on the manufacturers provided response curve it looks like it's dropping off well before 100hz.

seems OK. fs is determined from the maximum in the impedance curve. and with the low qt value, the early roll off can be expected.

btw: finally a TB 3" with a usefull Xmax!

Edit -you beat me to it. Anyway, concurred, it looks fine to me, based purely on the manufacturers published sheet linked to. Impedance peak on the spec. sheet indicates Fs is at the 75Hz stated, & the mass corner of 2Fs/Qt = 483.87Hz matches the FR curve.

So this one should have the high frequency performance of a 3 incher with the bass output of a 4 incher (same Fs as the 4 inch bamboo driver). Except for the low sensitivity it looks like a great little driver.

Manufacturer response curve is usually on open baffle. You can get more bass by using horn or bass-reflex enclosure.

Yes, that's the usual trade off.

The Mark Audio are much more intriguing to me than either of those. Tang Band has yet to win me over, they have too little consistency, too many models, and don't seem to spend much time refining things before shipping.

Their 8" fullrangers do seem superb though.

Don´t fall into that trap unless you´re talking car subwoomphers. A driver pumping like mad is a driver loaded with LF it can no way convert into SPL. Back to the drawing board, have a dream about a horn really loading the driver.

As a sat unit or line array, 3" seems the optimimum size for a metal cone driver.

Just saw these on PE site- why are people comparing them to much more expensive drivers? Looks like a bit of a bargain for the spec.

There is a raise or possible breakup just under 20khz. Not sure about accoustic XO at 80hz as they drop off a little too much perhaps. Anyone tried them? They could be just what I'm looking for..

IIUC That's a Dan Wiggins driver. It has the attention to detail I'd expect. Plus the datasheet specifically mentions XBL in the motor description.

It probably kicks donkey, but at that price it needs to.

Wish Jordan did a model between the jx92 and the jxr6.. wd be the perfect driver IMO

Mark Audio already do several. I know I'm going to get some flack for saying this, as Jordan are often seen as some kind of sacred cow, but the fact is, the engineering in the MA drivers is also several generations beyond the Jordan units. The latter remain good performers, but the world moves on, simple as that.

Scott, I think few pos(t)ers herein are aware of Mark's devotion, emotion and most surprisingly as you note, the direct feedback he invites - guys (it's hard to think of Mark as a typical faceless corporation) like this are certainly to be cherished and encouraged
