FRS 8 - should I go for the enAble and phase plug idea?

Hi all.

I'm making a version of the Tysen (other thread somewhere...), so I wondered if these little FR drivers I've chosen could benefit from enAble and a phase plug. As they are, they have a paper cone, and a poly dustcap. I have a spare to play with before I do the full treatment on all the speakers.

You can consult the enabl how to thread for all the details. There are mixed opinions on these things. I am in the process of setting up (with some rebuilding) a close-to enabl versus plain vanilla for the Fostex 127e.

I say close-to because there is a seemingly endless refinement of degree for doing the enabl process. To my mind this means that if I do not perceive a dramatic difference it could be attributed to the fact that I didn't do it right.

Some swear by it. I may wind up swearing at it. Right now, who knows?

My conclusion is that if you don't do it yourself, you will never know. The process is not highly reversible but you will still have usable hardware.

Any opinions on the phase plug?

I (may) have acess to a lathe at school - never used it before so this could be interesting...

I called you chrisb in error.

As to prices the EnABL tweak is sold as a kit by one of the members. It is under patent by budp and the kit is from Ed LaFontaine: paint, calligraphy nibs and some post- EnABL treatment called Microgloss. You will have enough to paint patterns on lots of things.

And I am not familiar with the particular FR8 driver which is the subject here. My use of home brew phase plugs (also described in a thread by that name) is a bit haphazard. This means I have no good results to share. I would review the theory of phase plug and EnABL too before application.

I've looked at phase plugs for a while - they make the treble sound a lot smoother - reduces destructive interference.

Sounds like I'll become a temporary painting fanatic...

TBH, I prefer just Chris - the 661 is the name of a manufacturer of mountain bike stuff, and was handy to add on, as "Chris" was already taken.
