Default Would these work in an OB line array?

Specifications: *Power handling: 15 watts RMS/30 watts max *VCdia: 3/4" *Le: 0.68 mH *Impedance: 8 ohms *Re: 7.59 ohms *Frequency response: 130-14,000 Hz *Fs: 130 Hz *SPL: 87.5 dB 1W/1m *Vas: 0.073 cu. ft. *Qms: 2.88 *Qes: 1.24 *Qts: 0.87 *Xmax: 1.5 mm *Dimensions: A: 4-1/8" (5" diagonally ear-to-ear), B: 3-5/8", C: 1-7/8".

I have found these 4" for cheap. I figure that they would sound great with eight per open baffle with a tweeter and a Goldwood 18" in a TL or OB. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I would use 6 drivers pr side, as 8x 3.5" only makes a very small array
And more drivers would be too expencive even with cheap drivers

WWMTMWW, would be 2.5way
This means that ALL 3.5" will play deep, but only 2 play midrange
Crossover shouldnt be much of an issue, as you already have decided to implement a tweeter

I am considering these interesting 3.5" Vifa fullrange
http://www.tymphany.com/tc9fd-18-08
Around here they cost 14EUR
Copper cap on pole piece and pretty good Xmax(6mm p-p)

Tweeter would be TB 2" alu tweeter, which I have bought cheap
It can be crossed very low
Very simple xo seems possible
Its built like a small woofer, and in OB it will be genuine dipole

I will however only do MTM, with a 15" woofer, maybe

I was thinking more like 8 or 16 pe tower OB all full range, a tweeter, and a powered sub at 75Hz down. The sub go in a TL or sealed box, the tweeter is plpaced in the middle of the array and the midranges go in a curved line or like Bose did in the 901 and have half the compliment 15degree off the other half. The bose idea is not a LA, but it might be better.

OB line array ..... too complicated. Too many issues to be solved or traded-off.

My recommendation is to take the cost of multiple drivers and buy one better driver. Think simple. Pick one or two woofers, a single mid or full range driver, and possibly a tweeter if required. Passive or active crossovers will both work.

The key will be the design work to get an optimum result using a minimum number of drivers.

On the whole, I'd tend to agree with Martin. OB, yes. Array / semi-array / focused array, yes. OB array? Not convinced.

That said, there has apparantly been a successful OB curved array (well, he seems happy with them at any rate): http://www.dmitrynizh.com/labaffles.htm and I believe there are some other OB arrays that have been done with reasonable success. More generally, the MMMMMMMMTMMMMMMMM configuration was used by Jim Griffin in a straight monopole semi-array (IIRC, he called them Needles) with TB drivers & a ribbon tweeter; I seem to remember the listener needed to be about 12ft away for the mid + tweeter outputs to be best balanced.

I know which driver that is and was going to buy a bunch too but decided i already have too many drivers. I think they would work on OB or even in a small sealed box. Another reason i decided against buying them was the high Fs. There are better drivers out there but these are pretty cheap! If you are itching to build something interesting and want to experiment with 8 per side i bet you will come out of the project learning something as well as have a cool looking and probably pretty good sounding speaker (8 per side on OB + tweeter + 18" woofer can't be anything less than interesting and will move lots of air... i bet it would sound really good in the right room and with the appropriate elbow grease). If the project goes south you end up with a bunch of 4" drivers you can stick in small boxes for home theater use or as gifts to friends in need.

If you buy these cheepies keep us posted on their performance.

I was looking at those (actually looking for some 69-cent wonder) and thinking the 3x5" version looked more interesting. If anyone knows of a decent cheapie to learn to build speaker arrays with, I'm interested. After I learn woodworking and have some kinks worked out I'll invest in serious drivers.

If you really want to do arrays, I suggest you keep an eye on the Partsexpress clearance / bargin pages. They sometimes have drivers on there that might be of use.
