anyone tried holding the frame of a driver onto a baffle with magnets set into the wood?

Got an idea of cutting down the frame of a driver - (to get a neater finish)

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Then use small magnets set into the baffle to hold the driver instead of the screws.

Its a light driver and in OB so no real forces to deal with i think.

I think you'd find that the inertial forces imparted by the driver are greater than you might suspect, and would require substantial magnetic flux to hold securely in place.

I could be way off base, but since it's not likely that the mounting rim of the basket frame, whether stamped or cast, would achieve adequate galvanic isolation, I'd be concerned that eddy currents from a sufficiently strong magnetic attachment system could affect the motor assembly.

I've had a look through my favourites but can't find the link to an open baffle builder that mounted the full range by its magnet. This set up could easily allow you your 'clean baffle' look.

Any one know what I mean ? :xeye:

that sounds like something from the Hawthorne Silver Iris builders' forum, to name at least one location:

As best as I can recall, a couple of DIY methods involved either the fabrication of felt lined, split wooden yoke that clamped around the perimeter of the magnet; or the use of metal band clamps. In either case, they then attached to main baffle via a variety of cinfigurations of supporting struts / frames.

Of course, creative design and precision machining in aluminum, etc., could give you a variation on something like this:

Very similar in the link and I think the description you give is about spot on. There was a great write up with lots of pics, but for the life of me I can't find it
