Default Extreme OB, & Problems in Running The Edge

Hi there,

Inspired by this interesting approach, I'd like to give it a try -- in a low SPL application -- TV sound.

The speaker in my flat panel TV set is I thought the absolute worst of all -- thin sounding with awful colorations, I often miss the dialog.

Briefly tried my spared 8" fullrangers, played them naked, I thought it's worth trying. To get an acceptable tonal balance under a certain SPL should be doable.

To give it a simple sim, I was going to use the <Edge>, but I can not run it any more in my PC. Tried it several time and re-download the latest software, still the same I can't figure it out.

Does anyone have the same situation?

I'd like to know I have to compensate this extreme OB under 400Hz or 300Hz.

Thanks in advance if any helps

Try to delete the file 'edge.ini'. It may be hidden, so you have to do an extended search for it.

Thanks a lot But I can not find such a file in my PC

The system I'm playing consists of a pair of 8" paper cone fullrangers and a very simple chip amp kit with STA540SA. I put them together and applied EQ by DEQ2496 temporarily. I used 2 shelving filters. The overall shelving spreads across 80Hz to 1.5kHz with 6db/oct slope (so, almost 30dB difference between the LF plateau and the HF depression).

With no baffle, the 8" cones struggle to make any bass. Within very short distance and on axis, I did get an acceptible tonal balance. However the available SPL was way too small. During passages with low bass energy, the available SPL was only more or less at normal conversation level. "Clipping noise" appears when louder than that. I'm not sure it's the amp or speaker, yet.

Adding a steep HP filter at 40Hz improved the SPL ability somewhat, but still not enough. More experiements to come....

The EQ is not finished yet. The picture shows the temporary installation.

The baffle-less drivers diliver a clear sound I expected, much better than the speakers in the TV set. When watching TV in the late night, I can hear the sounds clearly at a lower volume.

The EQ circuit needs more work, though....

Extra points for audacity and minimalism. It will be interesting to see if this can be EQ'ed acceptably flat. I salute you, sir.
