Is there a good resource for functional TL theory? A book on functional design principles perhaps?

A good grounding can be had by reading everything on Martin King's site and to scare up a copy of Augspurger's AES paper/aXp article.

I've seen on the plans that these can be made two ways. With the driver on the large side of the box and with it on the narrow side. I see you used the large side. Is there a compelling sonic reason to do that vs. the narrow side? Or was it just a personal preference?

I went wide because I liked the look, and they fit better on the shelf they usually sit on for casual listening. I think the general consensus is that the driver on the narrow face images better.

Wide baffle pushes baffle step down in frequency, narrow has less delay re difraction.

How did you do the grilles? They look very good!

It's speaker cloth stretched over some 1/4" bb plywood frames. I used spray glue for sticking them down and then brushed on silicone after trimming to keep the edges of the fabric from fraying. The back side of them looks far rougher than the front. They are held on with magnets sunk into the baffle.

Are the frames prefab or did you make them yourself? I've been thinking about doing something similar myself but wasn't able to find suitable rings.

I cut them myself with my router and jasper jig. It was quite easy, and the fit was perfect. Getting the fabric stuck on the backside evenly is the hardest part. You just have to patiently work it into place. I'll see if I can find some construction pics later.

FWIW, embroidery hoops makes making round grills a fairly trivial procedure for the time and/or woodworking challenged.

Does anyone know what the highest frequency is for the generation 1 and 2 of the Mark Audio CHR-70? I'd like a full range speaker without having the higher frequencies "piercing" my ears (fatiguing).

Anyone used Alpair CHR-70 as midrange (250-10k) in a 3 way system ? sensivity is not a problem since i use minidsp (tri amp) and mid amp is 150w rms.

just to show you what I did with my chr-70. in-cielling suround speaker for my HT, match with a cheap dayton ND20. the CHR is full range and the tweeter is cut with only a 1uF cap. "very good result". I luv it.
