Evening all....
Whilst most here enjoy the extended range of a single driver, there are many that suppliment either end (sometimes both) with an additional driver to suit their musical tastes. I'm interested in a free lunch crossover for a potential two way project, a D9nf on top and a ten inch driver to suppliment the bass. I wish to avoid the timing/phase shifts associated with a conventional crossover. Is it feasable to crossover completely accoustically (I'm guessing around 100Hz) and of so, what's the cost accoustically ie what do I compromise in doing so? Thinking aloud from an ignorant perspective : For high pass I understand that the baffle width of an open baffle reaches a cancellation frequency and for low pass maybe a 4th order bandpass "sub"? |

You will not be enjoying freedom from "timing/phase shifts" with
that approach, but that doesn't mean that it might not sound good.

Thanks for the gentle warning Nelson
(and thank you too for your new Fs plots on the d9's)... |

Consider bi-amping with a plate amp for the bass driver.

Thanks Cal, but I've a pair of Graaf GM20 OTL's availible so 4 x 20W's on tap... I'd much prefer to run each driver directly if it's possible.
I can eventually high/low pass passively at line level (I've an active Pass XVR1 to experiment with first) as I've suplus gain after my DAC but I was wondering if I could do it without any extra components ie accoustically..... My other option I suppose is to mono the amps giving 70wpc and use a passive series xover but I'd much prefer the former, it seems a more efficient design |

Something I have seen work well is the Velodyne V10 product (occasionally
on sale at Fry's for $149) sitting below the FR in a baffle or even a box. The frequency, level and phase controls are functional and I have used it without any crossover on the FR. The result greatly exceeds expectation. |
