Default Help for driver in open baffle

Hi

I want to built an open baffle speaker, using only a fullrange driver.

I ended up thinking about the Visaton B200,or the Audionirvana super 12' or 10'

What do you think?

Thanks

B200 is definitly OB material, the ANs will be happier in a box (unless tou use helper woofers)

I do not know the AN drivers but I have heard the B200 and I liked it in an Open Baffle. It does like a large baffle though.

While not "exactly" a single driver, take a look at the Hawthorne Silver Iris. It's tailor made for open baffle use and sounds very nice with a fairly modest baffle size.

You could also try MJK's design with some full range Fostex drivers and bass reinforced with an additional woofer.
I have tried it with a Fostex FE87E and Eminence Alpha 15A with good results.

A single full range driver on an open baffle pretty much eliminates any chance of getting decent bass output. You really need to add a helper woofer that can produce a much higher SPL/W/m, either by EQ boost or because it is just that much more efficient, to get a speaker system that can span bass to treble frequencies. You just can't beat the basic physics problem associated with reasonably sized open baffles and bass frequencies.

Amounst the speakers i currently have in my listening room is a set of these... it amazes me that an open baffle speaker like this can sound so boxy... i put it down to cone self-noise, we'll see when i finsih modding the set downstairs.

I could not live with the SI.

I haven't heard this but have the drivers for a variation... FF85 + Alpha 15. My experience to date suggests that this will be better.
