Default Where do I start?

Hi guys. First.. I spent the last 15years enjoying my Tannoys.. he he. But, I have lots of parts, old speakers in my workshop, but no experience at all with fullrange drivers.

Oh yes, I built very nicely finished Zigmahornets, wich sould like a failure to me. No bass at all. So, back to step one. What can I do with these Foster Fe-103, beige cone?

I equally have 2 sets of Isophons 6.5" drivers. One pair being the "Red" ones, and another quite identical (smaller magnet) that are black.

I once had Lowthers. Not for me, definitely. Those highs.

And I regret I never found a matching driver for a Goodmans 301 I once had. This was "the" fullrange driver, especially when using my Behringer eq.

So, to make a long story short. My living room is small, and the Big Tannoys went out, in the workshop. Since that time, I miss having a good little speaker for jazz, acoustic music, that I could use with a nice small tube triode amp that I have.

Any suggestions about where to start a project around these Isophon or Foster? Opened to suggestions. How about a mini Autograh corner horn cabinet for those 6.5" full rangers? ;-) just kidding!

Sylvain

Planet 10's frugal horns come to mind but the Tannoys will be hard to beat.

What's your strategy for bass?

Maybe you should just send the Tannoy;s to me and then everything will sound much better

I have to come up with an enclosure for a customer's FE120A *and then i'll do the same for mine if it works out). The grey magnet Isophons probably want to be in an OB. The extra grunt of the big red magnet might well make them suited for a more exotic enclosure.

I'b e not had a chance to measure the red ones, i may have data for the grey.

Ted - if Dave was trying to do only 3 things at once, he might have time to look at what he was typing (of course he'd still have to locate one of dozens of pairs of glasses to be able to read it)

You should try and work from some of his "pre-release" enclosure sketches

Typing* in the dark watching TV with the laptop on my lap. Translating the letters typed in one direction or the other would probably make it legible -- call it a code

* (took grade 11 math instead of grade 10 typing, so typing requires 2 fingers and looking at the keyboard)

dave

(i went back & fixed that post, so if none of you can figure out what Moondog is talkin' 'bout, too bad )

Point taken, you beat me on the math, but at least I can type with 3 fingers and thumb for space bar

Hello,

i prefer my new KORNETT,
best Imp for tubes,
down to 35 Hz,

or for your 103,
the FLUTE sat, + Bass
or the TROMBONE,
103 front driver,
but notice the Xmax is ~ o,35 mm,
thats less than ~0,5 W

better try the Kornett

Default hummm?

Well, may be I should have put it this way:

The Tannoy cabinets were big and ugly.. and since my 300B amp, after more than 10 years of continuous use, was needing some TLC, I just sent all this stuff in the workshop.. 3 years ago..

So, for now, I try to figure out if a project could both make use of the Fe103 (vintage Fosters) or the Isophons, and bring back some real music in the house, using a little Philips SE amp that I have.

As for the Fe103, should I have considered some kind of notch filter to bring the sound balance back? as is, they sound thin, cardboard mids, almost no bass and soft highs.

Ideally, I'd like a project with a small footprint, and light on the budget.

About the Isophons, giving a try to an OB is tempting. Are they only good mids, or can it be fullrange? later incorporating a small sub could be a nice compromise..
