well, one of the kids and her BF bought a low mileage used Prius. Anyone actually install any single drivers in factory locations (door) to good effect? The opening is suitable for 6-1/2" to 6-3/4", so "167" sized seems the way to go. Me n' Mike (the BF and my audio partner) have played around with a few speaker builds and he thought perhaps some single drivers would be nice. He's willing to spend a few $$$.
I know of one guy that used some Totem Mites in his van, and I'm sure the Vifa co-axes available at Apex JR could work (but are on the small side). Any fullrangers out there available in North America that have been used in this way? as always, thanks to any and all that respond. stew

well yes of course any vehicle that is capable of getting more than 20 m.p.g has been outlawed recently. But I think Mike lied and said it used spotted owl hatchlings for fuel or something similar, or pre-fossilized petroleum products. Public servants in this province aren't up on all that new fangled "hippie" talk, don't ya know.
![]() It's Albertan's right to burn as much as fast as we can. The legacy of King Ralph and all. The little 'yota easily fits into the box of Mike's crew cab 4X4 diesel 3/4 ton though. He can haul it around in case he gets a flat and call it a "spare".

IME, the door locations are typically so far off axis that the top end suffers on 'your' side of the car. It's not so noticeable when a small tweeter is taking over where the large cone gets too directional.
I'll be curious to see where ya'll go with this effort.

I agree. Aside from the fact that cars just don't work very well for audio.. high freq dispersion, directivity, getting the drivers close enough together, off axis response, etc etc.. are all major obstacles when attempting to implement a decent sounding setup in just about any vehicle. A typical car audio install would probably be one of the worst applications for a single full-range driver per side IMO.

Since any paper-cone speaker would require cutting down a tree, I'd suggest a hemp-cone speaker.

Hi,
It might sound mundane but carefully chosen (using your ears) car speakers can be miles better than poor cheap original speakers fitted into cars. Nearly all of them are polypropylene or similar i.e. waterproof, and its possible for them to rolloff smoothly with no nasties. The tweeters that come with them are a different matter, some are dreadful, and in nearly all cases are too loud to integrate properly. Needless to say the "3-ways" are best ignored. Models keep changing. The last time I looked at car speakers for someone ended up with some 6.5" Infinity speakers with a co axially set steerable tweeter, fabric dome of some sort, knocking the tweeter level back helped a lot. http://www.madisound.com/catalog/pro...oducts_id=1757 + apex jr tweeters would be decent, but Qts a little low. |

thanks for all the suggestions. Car audio is way out of my scope of anything audio, except I do understand the requirement for power to overcome road and engine noise. The cab of the Prius is very quiet, and is having an all leather interior package installed as I type (with electric seat warmers, etc).
sreten, I'll look into the Infinity loudspeakers, and also the Peerless and Apex Jr stuff (I like Steve, and we need to purchase a few items from him shortly anyway). Because of our success using FR drivers in home stuff, he wanted to consider FRs. stew

Jordans might be good in that kind of small space, JX92s. Mine seem very well built and so might survive well.
