can anyone help me with a question about phase...
if i was to build eg a 1/4 wavelength TL cabinet, and wanted the exit port to fire downwards onto the floor, instead of pointing in the same direction as the driver, would this mean that the signal coming from the exit port was out of phase with the direct signal coming from the driver. if so, what would i need to do to get them both in phase .... my thinking is that a 1/2 wavelength would be needed to get the phase right if i wanted a downward firing port, or am i just way off the mark here. cheers |

when did Newcastle move to Wales?
Or more to the point, the direction of the wavefront does not affect it's phase. The time delay for the wavefront to get from the back of the cone (out of phase) to the port will determine whether the port wavefront is in phase or out of phase or somewhere in between, with that coming directly from the front of the cone.

To add to Andrew's comments, the wavelengths at the frequencies involved are sufficiently long that it makes no practical difference where the port is except for boundary loading.
Firing the port at the floor will assist in the low pass function of the line and gain you some floor loading. dave

thanks there guys ... looks like i was worrying a bit there ... just that i couldn't find any useful info about phase, and was worried that having gone and built the speaker, i'd find out that i'd made a basic schoolboy error.
well spotted andrew .... Yes i'm welsh, and there are a few newcastles in wales, but i'm in the wee toon just south of your good self, the one with the self destructive footy team. So technically i am welsh, but am located in england right now ... and it would be more accurate having the flag of st george flying proudly below my own name ..... well, be honest, could you ???? nige |
