Hi!
Im going to build my first diy BR loudspeaker. I cant make up my mind on these 2. Ive heard the Jordan driver in a TL box, only for a short while though and the HF did not impress. With a fostex supertweeter on top, I was alot happier. So I thought to myself, I should use these Jordan drivers, but then I saw the Fostex f120A driver which seems to be an even better one...? Anyone compared them? I intend to use them in a 5.1 system eventually. Also filmmusic/classical is my main usage, and Im looking for a distinctive sound = not boring. |

Try Jim griffin's Jordan mini monitor with the ribbon. It's an excellent speaker by all accounts and ribbons sound far from boring...

Not the F120A, but similar. I prefer the sound of the FX120 over the JX92S. However, everyone else who hears the two at my place prefers the JX92S (clearly there is something wrong with all of their ears!
What the JX92S can clearly do a lot better than the FX120 is move air. Hope this helps. Cheers

I will be able to answer this question soon... I have the JX92s running in small ported boxes with the G2Si already. Wonderful speakers, for sure. And a pair of F120A will be on my doorstep by the end of the week. I plan to demo them both at BAF '08.

Seems we have an interesting mix.... I have both the FX120 and the F120A and have listened to both extensively. Hands down the F120A reigns as winner. I even purchased a pair of the T90A super-tweets and was going to bring them in around 10-12KHz... but after listening to the F120A full-range I've decided not to.
hifiZen, I'd be very interested to hear about your comparison of the F120A and JX92S as I'm thinking about picking up a pair (JX92S) in the near future. Regards, KM |

Thats exacly what I was thinking on doing, buying the T90A on top.
kmaier, whats your main music usage? Could you please tell what difference the T90 made? It seems to me JX92s has better bass while the F120A performs better in the upper region. I wonder if a high end ribbon would be a better way to go. lets say RAAL 140-15D. Also I cant stop thinking what the T500mkII would do, its pretty sensitive though. Thanks for all replies! |

Hi Sharp,
I listen to a wide variety of music... jazz, classical, rock, pop.... but I never did get around to hooking up the T90A tweeters... the F120A seem fine without them. Sorry I can't tell you more. Regards, KM |

How would you describe the difference between the FX120 and F120A? don't be afraid to use audio-tweak-speak - I'll can always dust off my Harvey Rosenberg thesaurus

Hi Chris,
In short, both of these drivers share some components... frame, suspension, dustcover and most likely the cone (albeit different front color)... real difference is in the magnet assembly, and of course the cost. I posted a comparison and some pics on Audiocircle quite some time ago. I hate to cross post in general... but this thread has quite a bit of detail and dialogue with other members... Jim Rebman included... and is the thread that persuaded him to buy a pair of the F120A drivers. Here's a link: http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/i...?topic=46749.0 and I hope the DIY audio police don't arrest me for it... The F120A provides much better detail and clarity, especially in the upper octaves. They are more accurate in timbre and nuance as well... the only single driver I like more is the Feastrex D5nf... which are setup and running now. Regards, KM PS - my id on AC is floobydust |
