Half Calhoun?

Hello i've created a testcabinet with 2x FR125 (bipole configuration, sealed enclosure, based on planet10-designplans). I like the sound, but i'm also drawn to the (half-)Calhoun. For now i've 2 questions :
1. What's are the main differences between Calhoun and sealed-bipole SQ-wise?
2. Are there any plans for the half-Calhoun or would it be sufficient to half the height and double the width of the originial Calhoun?

I can't answer those questions as the box was designed for me not by me. I will ask around and see if I can get you a response. Glad to hear you have an interest. I am pleased with mine but they are still in unfinished boxes for now till I find some room for them.

Cal's Calhouns are the best box i have yet heard for the CSS WR125s...

A picture if you haven't already seen them. I much prefer the side mounting of one driver over both on front.

Nice to know that they are the best xR125 box you've heard. To improve WAF i would like to build the half-version. Side-mounting looks like a nice trick. Are the cabinets to be placed against the wall for full BSC?

They work well away from the wall as well but I always say you should experiment to your liking. The WR's have plenty to offer in the bass department.

IIRC I emailed Dave some CSS dimensions so watch this space. I retuned it a bit too to give a little more LF gain.

Scott, do you have any idea about the -3db point in the bass-response?

Depends on the amplifier & the room. ~50Hz as a very rough guide. Ultimate extension wasn't a priority.

Yes, I think if you are concerned with extension, you can consider a helper woofer in a separate box. The Calhouns offer sufficient bass but not that deep. Hey it's only a 4.5" driver.

I would rather have more instead of deeper bass. Compared to my Spendor S5e the sealed-bipole is a little lean on bass. But before thinking about adding an helper woofer, i would like to try the half-Calhoun. I hope Dave can find the plans in his email-history.

That was what I asked for as well and am happy with the upright version. I'll see if I can put a bug in Dave's ear.
