Default RE: Rare full range driver DUODE 12"

Hello, everyone its been some time since I have posted but I have been extremely busy. I picked up a very old pair of speakers and I am stumped as I cant find any info on them . I thought maybe one of the members of the diy site could help? They are labeled DUODE made in England, have a very heavy cast frame an the magnet looks similar to a early Tannoys. The cone is super paper thin like an early Lowther and the model is 12D, there is a bit more info on the label. They are in very heavy non ported square cabinets that are completely stuffed full of 4 inch squares od fibre glass. Has anyone out there ever heard of this company ? as all the sites that I have checked so far it seems to be omitted? Any and all help with this puzzle would be greatly appreciated as I could use some specs and any other info. Thanks in advance , its been awhile since I have been stumped like this? Cheers Daren

Thanks guys for the info , as I did a search and wasn't getting any results but I guess it was a long shot. Hi Ross as I am a fairly new member I am unable to email you directly so you will have to email me if thats possible? I havent listend to them yet but its on the short list. Its interesting that they were bought out by Hartley as I also have a great Hartley driver I would likt to pair up. Many Thanks <regards Daren

Email sent.

You misunderstood me re Hartley. The firms were not related, and one did not buy out the other. I gather there was just some exchange of information and possibly use of patents.

I will be sending some info on the Duode to movingcoilguy by email later this weekend. If anyone wants a copy of these emails let me know ASAP.
They will include the original sales lit. plus rather dubious T-S parameters plus comment from Ralph West re a Voight type cabinet design.

Default RE: Duode

Hello, many thanks Ross and sorry for the confusion about the Hartley. As far as the Duode goes I managed to carry one upstairs and hook it up. I was taken by surprise as it sounded better then expected. I dont think they are as efficient as I had hoped but I think they are possibly 15 ohm? I have yet to hook up the pair together but will do soon. I think the Duode is well suited to acoustic instruments like guitar and seemed to fair well with strings. I found it very responsive and fast and the clarity of the human voice was very nice. I am not sure about the cabinet as the bass may have been lacking but I didn't have time to paly around with the cabinet position which may help the problem? A better cabinet may help as the original cabinets are not ported. Does anyone know if you can get more bass out of a ported cabinet with the Duode? I will keep you posted anyway, as far as the Hartley I have a really nice Hartley driver that I would love to pair up if anyone has a single. It has a very strange frame that is closed in on 2 sides and is about 8.5 inches. Thanks Daren

Hi Movingcoilguy.
Your emails are still bouncing. I understand you have Duode1 attachment. Correct?
I will try once more, with two much shorter emails., and in particular a highly compressed Duode2. I was going to send you a Ralph West TQWT cabinet design but under the circumstances....

The al former acts as a shorted turn at bass frequencies so there is little resonance to boost the bass that occurs in most drivers. You could try a TQWT which helps.

What model Hartley do you have. If its a 315 I have info- but only if you get a better mailbox.

Default RE: Duode

HI Ross, sorry for the very late reply as I finally got a chance to grab some holiday time. I dont know what is going on with the emails as I have never had a problem before so its a bit of a mystery? I am going to start using a new address so maybe then we can sort this out. The model of hartley I have is a 215 I believe as it is 10 inches from the outer edge of the frame to frame. Are those the demensions of the 215? The 215 I have seen appear all to be red around the magnets, mine on the other hand is a brownish grey. They appear to be very good drivers and I was thinking of tracking down a mate and building cabinets or at least trying them in my Mau Horns? I appreciate your patience with this post and I am looking into the email issue as I was never aware there was a problem until now. Thanks Daren
