Has anyone heard of or listened to the Aurousal A1 speakers ( careful how you pronounce it) as they were supposed to be one of the best in show for sound at Heathrow 2007. Beat many speakers costing much more as some say. Seems they use a Jordan driver. Which one do you think it is.
Not over expensive but could it be made for less and probably better. http://www.aurousal.com/ |

No surprises here.. It's just a basic JX92S in a ~10 liter br box without filter.

Actually they're using a custom version of the JX92 IIRC. Personally I'd stick with the standard unit & design something (or use an existing design for them) that's a bit more interesting that a de rigure T/S alignment standmount vented box -a horn of some description, or Greg's MLTL designs would be favourite

Thanks for the replies.
What would be customised on the driver Scottmoose? Actually they are a good price as i think it would cost me close on £300 to buy the drivers, then birch ply, which isnt cheap. I do like those Cain and Cain designs Single horn Ben with the turned baffle, really striking. would love to incorporate the Jordan in a slightly smaller version, perhaps without the super tweeter. What do you think. |

I don't know the exact nature of the alterations, but I believe the voice coil materials are changed & other detail adjustments. I doubt the driver itself is any 'better' per se than the regular JX92S though -just different in some details.
I haven't done a cabinet for the Jordan for a while, though a horn similar in appearance to TC's shouldn't be tricky in design terms, or simply taking the aesthetic of his cabinets, and doing something different & simpler with the internals would also be easy enough. |

I think the Aurousal is the standard 8 litre ported box on the Jordan site. I have heard those and they sound fine but not as good as the VTL or GM's MLTL enclosures. The 48" MLTL is an excellent fullrange speaker.
BTW, check the prices via Jordan direct as you're in the UK. Last pair I bought was nowhere near £300 and a sheet of birch ply to build the vented boxes should only be around £25. Of course, if you really want to push the boat out you could try the BIB design for the Jordan. You may even be the first ... |

IIRC I designed the last. When funds permit I might have to look at the Jordans again, but it'll be a while.

I am demoing the Aurousals now as i wanted to hear what a fullranger sounded like. Well i am pleasantly surprised as they sound better than speakers with conventional drivers costing two and three times as much. Singers are clearer with more emotion in their voices and intruments have a more solid feel and placement in front of me. They have good bass but not as low as the floor standers i tried. The top end is not so high but i do like that as i hate that lispiness from vocals. Its there with these but it doesnt grater your ears and brain.
It looks as though i will go the diy route with a floorstanding fullrange. This is the only one i have heard so do you learned ones think that the Jordan driver could be bettered. Jim. |

If you like the Aurousals, stick with the Jordan - you'd probably have to pay a lot more to get better. You can better the cabinets though - the Jordan VTL design or any of the MLTLs will give you substantially more bass and a fuller overall sound.
