There are a number of fostex 6" fullranges out there. The 166E (Austin/BLH ), 164, 167 / 165K (Bob Brine's BK16, MK MLTL, etc..), 168 Sigma etc.. any number of these fall into the same sized box (38-42" tall, 10-12" deep, and 9-10" wide).
What has intrigues me most is the speaker linked below. http://audiotropic.netfirms.com/Projects/speakers.html I agree that the carpentry involved is daunting but I have a carpenter friend (professional cabinet maker) who has promised to help me. My budget is $150 per driver (or $300 for a pair). Almost all the Fostex 6" fit inside this budget with the 168 Sigmas being the most expensive. Given the budget and box size which driver / box does this forum recommend? Should I add a tweeter? The music on this will vary - Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Sgt. Pepper (Beatles) and maybe even some jazz if my wife is using the system. The speaker is for my son and the amp will either be a solid state Class A or a KT88 that his (my son's uncle) might volunteer to build. The soruce will be a CD 63Ki (some mods done as per a thread on another part of diyaudio).

Chilli Peppers have not sounded too good on the fostex units I have heard. Sgt. Peppers fair much better.

The other (non Fosex under $150) fullrange option is the JX92. The reason I am sticking to fullranges is that we intend to carry the drivers back with us on a trip to the US (we live in India) and dont want to struggle with too many drivers. Just 2 fullranges would be nice.

Hello,
check out my TUBA horn with JX92, or the new POSAUNE with double 6" Fostex. a single horn with a 6" Fostex might give not enough SPL for Red Hot.., Xmax only 0,6 mm.

If I may, that box was designed for a specific driver. He used the Fostex 164 and was preparing to upgrade to the 168S. Both of these drivers have been discontinued. Their replacements are the 167e and the 168es. Personally, I would not build that elaborate a box for drivers that you do not have and may not be able to find anymore (probably can tho). It certainly looks like a great cabinet making project! But in the end you may be able to make a similarly shaped box that’s better suited to the more current drivers available and get better results.
Smart man! You have found a way for your wife to endure, accept and encourage you to build an elaborate and expensive pair of speakers. My thinking cap is on… soon I will be recommending my son have a pair of Lowther back horns. Actually, I have two sons! They each need speakers. A picture of your wife on the plane carrying a full range driver in her lap for the trip would be priceless. >>> we intend to carry the drivers back with us on a trip to the US (we live in India) and dont want to struggle with too many drivers. Just 2 fullranges would be nice… Smart! Enjoy the US! I like it here. If you are in CA go to Jamba Juice and get a Smoothie. If in NYC, visit Serendipity’s and get a Frozen Hot Chocolate! Even tho some here feel Fostex may not be the best choice for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I suggest taking your son to some hi-end dealers to listen for himself. Have him bring a handful of his favorite CDs. I bet he finds the sound acceptable. Godzilla |

OK. I can see the design now. An oldie but a goodie. Newer interpretations of this labyrinth design have been done on a CNC router by Layertone Tony. Nobody has seen or heard much from him lately that I have seen. Ron's Austin was the inspiration for that. |

Posaune... interesting design ... with double drivers
I reckon that in midrange and top they will play mostly like a single driver .... but with lots more bottom end |
